Running Boards

I was sure I read it here but I am old so may have got it wrong !

Anyway I woke this morning with a burning desire to clean my running boards (nail appointment cancelled ). I popped off all of the little black plastic plugs and got to work with ultra fine wire wool. The plugs were fiddly to remove but after 15 mins all were removed. I used Brasso to give them a good polish then finished off with Meguiars Carnuba Wax. I'm very happy with the finish so thought I would share.

My next job is the interior of the arches. I do jet wash them but there is all kinds off sticky bits on there. If any of you guys or girls have tips please share them. I thought about using a clay bar but I don't think that will work.

Interesting, never thought about removing the rubber bits first before polishing them. Probably would have saved my fingers

Will give that a try next time when I can actually bend my knees and am allowed near a car again

For the arches - I use a wheel arch brush to clean those.

Only thing with using wire wool is that it will remove any anodiseing left and you will need to keep on top on them with a metal polish .....................but if they look bad then your on a winner.

As for arches i would get some good degreaser and work that in with a brush, then spray some tar remover on them and let that soak in, and finally give then a good wash with an old mitt. I wash in my arches every time i wash the car and they stay very clean.

Looks lovely Penny - were the little black plastic thingies difficult to prise out? I've ordered some Mothers Aluminium polish from Ultimate detailing to have a go at the runningboards sometime soon. Pewters-Should I be sealing them with after polishing?

If your going down the wire wool route they will need sealing to help against oxidisation

I have spoken to quite a few people and it seems that boards on 04 plate cars don't suffer the discolouring anywhere near as bad
