Motorway Speed Limit to Increase!

Post by scooby1doo1 » Wed Sep 28, 2011 6:10 am

Pads been thin heat up quicker then pads been thick, heats up the disc quicker = brake fade.

Try it for your self, a half worn braking system is no where near as good.

I'm not talking stopping from 40-50-60 mph here.

Is there a lower limit on a motorway? I am not aware of one.
Due Care & Attention? Obstruction?
Driving without consideration for other road users, comes under the same section as without due care and attention.
Think it was section 3 Road Traffic Act
I thought there was a minimum speed of 40-45 mph, or is this just for hgv's.
Nothing in the Highway Code. There are maximum speed limits defined for HGV's depending upon the road type, but not minimums.

Can't say I have yet experienced it on the motorway or on the back roads... Track driving maybe. I haven't changed my pads yet in 2.5 years. Having said that, mine are a tad bigger than the other X5 models...

Interesting, in NL the minimum speed is 70 km/h, that way you avoid having a tractor on the motorway as well.

So does that mean I can take my tractor on the M23 and do 34 mph? :D

No you can't as it's an 'Agricultural Vehicle' and banned. :rcard: :police: :D Nice try though

Rule 253: Prohibited vehicles. Motorways MUST NOT be used by pedestrians, holders of provisional motorcycle or car licences, riders of motorcycles under 50 cc, cyclists, horse riders, certain slow-moving vehicles and those carrying oversized loads (except by special permission), agricultural vehicles, and powered wheelchairs/powered mobility scooters (see Rules 36-46 incl).

every motorway on ramp had a sign to that effect up until the 1980`s .
I recall something about only vehicles capable of exceeding 30 mph allowed on motorways although fully laden HGV`s will be very slow uphill , but then again the main reason for building the motorways in the first place was for commerce .
Politicians have stated the main reason for increasing the limit is because many drivers already drive at 80 mph whenever possible so the new limit will keep them legal .

driver of an STGO CAT 2 ( very heavy ) low loader was prosecuted for failing to use lay-by`s on the A9 to allow the 5 mile tailback past .

If it goes ahead, I would be very curious to see what the new enforcement limit is.

However, much prefer that a greater evil is addressed - the middle lane hogger .... :headbang:
Middle lane drivers should be done for driving without due care and attention
I completely disagree with that statement !!! They should all be taken out and shot . Coming from HGV and caravan experience there is nothing worse than coming up behind some completely oblivious moron in the middle lane who insists on doing exactly 60 mph and point blank refuses to use the other lanes. :headbang:

I just overtake on the inside in that case, which is not illegal as long as you don't start weaving in and out of traffic.
