Windscreen wipers making a loud rumbling noise

My windscreen wipers are making a loud rumbling noise and not working unless I physically grab them to help them start and then it does a couple swipes stops and make a loud rumbling noise again , any ideas, looking to take apart on Saturday , hopefully I can fix it, rain forecast for Sunday

Yeah,I know it's Sunday before you get anyone to notice

Check the motor and gearbox. My guess is it's probably in that area. Sounds like the gearbox on the mechanism.

Yeah, and it's raining,and I did nothing on Saturday

And it's all fixed now,
inside the windscreen wiper motor was a big white wheel that had worn out, so went on eBay and found a site with a second hand one from 06 That was exactly the same as mine, only cost me £40 and I fitted the replacement in 20 minutes so the E 53 and E 70 share the same windscreen wiper motor

That's good news, and a real result for you. Could be a lubrication issue if the nylon gear wheel wore out though. Might be worth a dollop of ceramic grease in there too.

inside I found chewed up bits of plastic and Greece looks like it had been on the way out for a while, so nice to drive in the rain now
