White smoke

Post by ITBarbie » Mon Sep 19, 2011 4:30 pm

Hi

Had this realy weird thing happend today. I was on my way to work and the car was fairly warm (off the blue on gague ) and as I looked in my rear view mirror I noticed some white smoking coming from back. Instantly stopped the car to investigate and saw nothing untoward. I drove on further and when I stopped at the lights I notices a few wisps of white smoke and then nothing for the next 10 mimutes of the drive. I will see what its like when I go home. All I can describe the smoke as it what you get when you start it up in the morning or from cold. Got myself in a right state reading about Turbos and Manifolds!!! :o Its deffo not Turbo pipe as I have one of those go on the Landrover and that chucked out plumes of thick black smoke ! Maybe its crap diesel

Keep ya fingers crossed for me :D :driving:

It could have just been that extra "japanese fighter pilot", ( nip in the air ) this morning, what sort of time was it, early, I bet.

It was a tad chilly this morning - seems Autumn is upon us again - so that may well be the only cause for the steam. I did notice my X6 had a little extra 'zing' too due to the cooler air available to the turbos and engine. It was around 9°C here at 0800.

Fingers crossed. I failed to mention that I complained to MR ITBarbie that there was an unusual smell coming from the car 2 days ago to which he replied stop being paraniod it costs money!!! I truly hope its just my female paranioia!!! My car was reading 19 on the temp so it wasn't cold. No fighter pilots just a small Harrier Jump Jet tailing me on the way to work  :crazydude:

Hi Barbie,
Did you notice if the smoke was coming from the passenger side, if it was I suspect the pre-heat system :| if the car had just got warm enough then the white smoke might be occurring in the shutdown sequence. I'm sure we will have lots of threads about the pre-heat system in the next months
Loving your new picture :) Good luck

I think Barbie knows the passenger side smoke :)

Humidity plays a part in this as well.

Not in any way wanting to feed paranoia, female or otherwise, but keep an eye on coolant levels.

You probably drove through/over summat which is causing the odd smell - nothing like a bit of roasting oddment on the exhausts to make a pong! :fuelfire:

White smoke

Post by ITBarbie » Mon Sep 19, 2011 9:47 pm

Now I'm not so ladylike and crapping my pants :-(. Started car at 7.30pm and no smoke but unusual sound when revved the car there was this sound that was weird. Not the whistle you get with the turbo but almost an low woo sound (I know but I can't think of another explanation). Drove home and saw a little white smoke but just the once and nothing unusual on kick down. I've got myself in a tizzy think cracked manifolds, shagged turbo, knackered breather the lot!!! When I pulled up outside the house turbo sound back to normal. That smell though just ain't right.

She's going in to my Indy tomorrow if they'll have her :-( My iphone5 fund may be depleted + some !

No Mayo in oil as I make sure I always eat my sandwiches at my desk. No seriously, I checked it this morning funnily enough as that smell was a bit suspicious and wanted to check the level.

White smoke

Has the X been using any water or other fluids? It doesn't take much to create a bit of 'smoke' on a damp morning and a small leak may have gone unnoticed in the nicer weather.

Just bouncing ideas here.

If it was a cracked manifold Pen you would have issues with starting and there would be an awfull smell in and around the bonnet area.Open up the bonnet and get someone to 'give it the beans' on the throttle pedal and it would smoke out the engine bay it it was acracked manifold.
Again just throwing out suggestions here but it could be a simple as a new filter needed or a pipe/hose come loose.
Just don't take it to AW8 to be assesed ;)
Hopefully its something simple and easy/cheap to fix
