Life with my X6....

Post by dubbers » Mon Aug 15, 2011 11:49 am

It's a month since the new white Tonka arrived on our driveway. Delivered from by the dealer in its "raw" state (9 weeks after order), just as I had asked them to. This was to allow, Barry from Autodetox to finesse the paint on the car without first fixing damage caused by the dealers valeters.

As it arrived on the driveway;

Cleaning the wheels

Removing the iron particles bonded to the paint (this is primarily caused by the rail transport). The purple streaks are the Iron X product dissolving the ingrained iron particles.

The car washed washed thoroughly and then moved into the garage for the paint to be refined by mechanical polisher and various pads and other polishing compounds. To seal the paintwork a layer of Gtechnic C1 was applied. Which should make the tonka a litle easier to clean?

Final result of two days of hardwork by Barry.

Excellent, and the only way to get the paint correct. I did the same with my M and it does save any dealer monkey generated damage!

Very nice ...

Incidentally, somewhere along the line it had been washed. Maybe when it entered port at Thorne as there was a small amount of wash damage, but this was easily corrected. The Sales person said that it was the first time in 20 years he had delivered a car without any dealer preparation (and suggested that some TFR was as good)!

The slick paint work attracted some envy stamps. My other half took it to Harrogate a few days after the detail and some vandal decided that the paint needed to be keyed. So it now sports about 60-70cm worth of scratches that go down to the primer. To say I was livid, is an understatement - but a crime like this has no recourse. Ultimately I'll have to pay a fairly considerable sum to have it fixed. The quotes Ive had from the dealer and an independent bodyshop range from £500-£1000 for a respray.

There were a couple of delivery problems, that were quickly rectified by a visit by the dealers troubleshooter. A loose bolt in the drivers side wing mirror, a loose bolt on the rear passenger door and mud flaps that work themselves loose. All of which are now fixed, apart from one troublesome mud flap on the rear.

The car, however is fantastic. I'm not sure what element is at the top of my list, but the new 8 speed auto has to be close. It is so smooth, and hangs onto the revs when you're in the mood! :) Most surprising is the sound quality of the stereo. I opted for the Professional audio (rather than HK) it really is first class (I feed it from an iPod with ALAC (lossless) audio).

The Tonkas first long journey was to Bergerac in the Dordogne, a round trip of 1750 miles. It is the most comfortable car I have driven, the two lumbar support air bags are particularly good (on my sports seats). Average fuel consumption was around 33mpg for that distance and the car was driven at a steady 1950rpm (about 80mph).

Rgds,
Ed

I was gutted when mine was hit in a car park on Xmas Eve. Repray of bumper and new o/s fog light required.

And I agree, these are potent beasts with a great transmission. The flappy paddles are useful too if you just need to 'nip past' the car ahead....ahem :D :driving:

I had the pro system fitted too and it can put out some punch. Went with the Comfort seats though.

Like the avatar too. 1210 mk? By the looks.

It's come back filthy, still covered in polish residue and although the paint is much better and there's a good match on the resprayed area they bo@@dy scratched it! I can tell that the seal & protect hasn't been done either.

They also locked the key in the car, had to come and get the spare, and then only gave me one key back!! :headbang:

Oh well, back to the bodyshop this morning to have a very 'deep & meaningful' about Care, Quality, and looking after Customer's cars! :headbang: :headbang: :poke:

Having had a 'Deep & Meaningful' it turns out that the service team - who updated the maps (free!) and replaced the driver's door seal under warranty, should have sent the car back to the bodyshop and not home to me. The workshop had been clamouring for the car and were given it, but were told to give it back to the bodyshop. Communication Breakdown!!

It goes back in on Monday to have the paintwork finished, roof done, scratch sorted, cleaned, insoected, reworked if necessary, cleaned again, seal and protect put on and THEN given back to me. Hopefully with both sets of keys this time too.
