Another newb

Post by Hammy » Sat Sep 03, 2011 4:43 pm

Hi folks, bought a 2004 V8 Sport yesterday (it will be my wife's daily driver but also for trips to our place in Bavaria).

Image

Being serviced, brake fluid change, MOT'd, couple of stone chips being done, valeted, be ready for Thursday. The only fault I could find was the one-touch opening for the drivers window wasn't working but the garage is sorting that.

First job will be to get the satnav, I know the car has a 2007 disc in at the moment and it's got the DVD system (MkIV?). Then I need to figure out about connecting iPhones to the car, I guess the Bluetooth will work for calls, but for music I need a Denison or similar, which I think will connect in place of the 6-changer? Alternatively, is there a way to connect USB sticks to the car for music?

Welcome Hammy!

Bluetooth through the car should be possible if you have the button under the centre console armrest.

Dension - mmmm..... Try Intravee first (pricey but worth it)!

Car looks good - hope all gets sorted for you.

There is a cradle mounted in the armrest, which has a button in front of it, is that what I need?

I shall go and do a bit of googlefu on them.

How complex is the fitting? I'm hoping it's a case of get the stereo out of the dash (I guess I'd need the appropriate stereo removal keys?), unplug the multichanger lead and plug in the replacement unit? Then just route the cable to the glovebox, or to a cradle (I tend to use Brodit mounts)? We currently have an iPhone 3GS and an iPhone 4, and I'll be getting a 5 once it comes out, so I'm not interested in trying to do the armrest mod with the snap-in connector because of potentially having to redo it several times for different handsets.

Welcome buddy,

Bluetooth - you got it in one.... Just brush up on the procedure, should be in the manual. Sorry, can't remember without looking.

Ha ha, removal of the headunit, no need!. That's the beauty of the product - just have to sacrifice the CD changer. Best integration at the mo, on the market.

Forget the armrest cradle mods, only advantage is the integration with the cars antenna and 'potential' better reception. But like you, I change phones more so than makes economical sense to buy a dedicated cradle.

Oh and the site for the Intravee is called http://www.intravention.co.uk

Got it. I currently use my iPhone as an iPod too, but looks like the best option will be to pick up a regular iPod and keep that in the boot purely for music, rather than running a cable back into the car (especially as it won't charge an iPhone anyway). Is there any simple way to run video to the dash screen? The car has tv & satnav.

A seperate iPod is the best option for the Intravee setup but be aware of the deep sleep the iPods go into when not in use for 12 to 16 hours (or so). You then have to physically press the button to wake them up or look at the list on the Intravention forum for the right iPod to buy that will allow for calander alerts to avoid this. Hence why mine is in the centre consloe.

There is the TV module and the AV in/out button you can use to tap into the car for video.

Check out toysinyourcar.co.uk for the cable and this thread for a media player suggestion:

And welcome form me too. Nice ride

I have the older Dension Ice>Link Plus in the X5 and although it's a good little system, the support from the namufacturer is poor in my experience. The firmware that drives the Dension is at best err.....interesting. If iPod goes to sleep then it can take a few mins to sort itself out and then it won't shut down when you switch the car off.

I have not upgraded the version I use (for an ipod 'Photo' with hard drive :P - yes that's almost antique!) as it means a rewire in the back of the car and I don't have the details, worryingly nor do Dension. Not sure I could recommend their stuff.

I want to dewire it to bring the CD changer into use again. Go with the Intravee. Expensive, but very clever. :driving:
