Goodbye X5, Hello X5 - fingers crossed!
Goodbye X5, Hello X5 - fingers crossed!
Sat on the train, off to check out an X5. It's a four hour journey so i hope it doesn't turn out to be a lemon!
We're moving house so i sold my 05 3.0d last week.
This should give me bit of money in the pot for moving and still have an X5.
It's an 03 4.4 with 100k on the clock, one owner from new. If it's as described i'll be a happy man
He knows i'm travelling a long way and said its worth it.
I don't travel that far so am not too bothered by the fuel consumption, if we need to do a long journey we always have the other half's Saab diesel (bet i still take the x5)
I know it needs tyres so have budgeted £650 ish for them - does that sound about right?
The cd changer doesn't work but i have a dice i used in the last car.

I would get a quote all fitted from event tyres who will fit at home/work then you can use this as figure you know it wont exceed.
I have Diamaris which are excellent on warm summer tarmac but dont like the cold & snow plus they can struggle in a sandy beach car park. If renewing 4 and absent of dedicated winter rims & rubber I would consider all rounders that might cope a little better in light sand/mud & occasional light snow.
I think you should allow £800-£1000 buy the time you have them all fitted. If seller disputes the maths get him to get 4 new tyres of your choice fitted & state you wont deduct for cost of the rubber.
Same with the CD changer. You might not use it but come resale in future someone will haggle you down if it isn't working. Use dealer for a price or maybe ebay trusted seller for price for a used one.......once again give seller option or sorting it to reduce haggle aspect on this.

Thanks AW8
Toyos look good they are about £715
Although we live in Yorkshire it's a major town, i've managed on without dedicated snow tyres before. (A lot better than my e39)
Maybe ebay for a CD changer
But they are both good barganing points.

Though not a winter tyre Toyo S/T reviews on xoutpost indicate they seem competent enough in mild snow conditions, (certainly more so than Diamaris), though some complaints of noise once they have done more miles.

Re: Goodbye X5, Hello X5 - fingers crossed!
Good luck with the journey and the car!
I have Toyo Proxies on mine from March time. Great tyre, no issues, concerns or complaints.
All in with fitting, valves, balancing, etc I paid £665. I did source the fronts from one internet supplier and the rears from another. Loads on this for contacts, see here:
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2119&p=21633&hilit=tyre#p21633
Changer is a future no pressure purchase, so no biggie.
Hope the car is worth the travel!

Quick non shameful reminder to check all usual stuff including absence of rear bush noise on kickdown & function of everything electric.
As it's a 4.4i then check for failure of rocker gaskets, PCV hoses under the engine cover, coolant leaks & front aux/pusher fan function,(when a/c on max).
Good Luck

Re: Goodbye X5, Hello X5 - fingers crossed!
Just got in an hour ago phew- what a day. 4 trains, 2 traffic jams, and the sat nav set to motorways rather than fastest route.(took me on the M25 - big mistake)
There are a few minor jobs to do but after some serious negotiation ...
i am now the owner of an
03 X5 4.4 Black with black leather & silver trim
Sat Nav but no TV (it's greyed out in the menu)
DSP - sounds better than my last X5 - sub in the back (and more speakers - or is it me?) I think i'll need a different adapter for the dice?
All hoses look good, although it did look like there had been some coolant splashed about a bit at some time.
I checked the CV boots, and for any sounds from the bushes - all good
I didn't know about the aux pusher fan function, how do you check that?
Some pixels have gone on the dash
There's one bad scratch on the bumper that will need paint, and some very light scratches that should polish out.
The screen occasionally flickers - ribbon connectors maybe? (no change in colour though)
Apart from that it's all good. i had a 250 mile journey to test it out, loving the power and smoothness of the V8. Temp stayed in the middle, handling seems better than my last x5.
AW8 - Thanks for the advice - most appreciated
Sanj - thanks for the pointers on the Toyos - i'll have a look at that thread
Wilkoturbo - let me know next time you're heading to Ripon i'll look out for you!

Re: Goodbye X5, Hello X5 - fingers crossed!
Thanks for update.
Glad you are happy, negotiated /checked well & got back in one piece........I also travel for our cars so aware how draining this can be.
Odd re no TV especially on a DSP car with NAV......Might be a technical issue rather than spec but can be sorted & if not to your financial liking then it's not the end of the world. In any case analogue plugs being pulled all the time now). A quick call to BMW will confirm exact spec ,(as well as dates of dealer visits which allow you to call dealer service departments for maintenance & servicing info).
Dash: Can be sorted for £100
Paintwork :Might be sensible to buy a machine polisher (bumper can be sorted for circa £50-100 localised repair or £2-£300 for whole repainted).
Aux fan test : Should work when a/c set on max cold, engine warm & running & car static. If fan then turns (at very front of car behind kidney grills), it works.... It's that simple.
Screen flicker : Agree - possible connection issue....... Perhaps other than the ribbons as colour is fine.
E53 V8 Coolant splashes ? : Perhaps now would be a good time to say welcome to the M62 V8 club

Congratulations - sounds like a good example with only some minor work to do, out of interest how did you find the fuel on your 250 mile trip home??

Can be a sketch!
For me if an owner is willing to share I know an owner is a happy chappy (or chapess)!
Enjoy the moment.
