2002 3.0d- 3.0 gearbox swap?

Post by ADE H » Tue Aug 16, 2011 10:57 am

Hi all thanks in advance for your interest. I have a problem with a GM auto box, th oil pump has gone (my fault i did not line up the the new torque converter when i fitted it and it crushed the pump when i tightened up the box, what an idiot!), i have been offered a gearbox out of a petrol 3.0 same year and still a 5l40e but the part numbers are different. Has anyopne had any experience on doing this or does any one have a pump kicking about;). Any help will be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. I'm currently assessing my gearbox situation and from what I've seen the 3.0 petrol box will not work in the 3.0d however i may be wrong. The fact the part carries a different part number would suggest its not the same.I'm currently considering a recon as they are not much more cash than a second hand unit that may not be any better than the one you already have.

Petrol boxes have different drive ratios and the diesel ones are upgraded to handle the extra torque. You should be able to get another pump assembly though. I think the one for my ZF box was about £200 new, and another £250 for a new TC. How much damage was done to casings etc?

A gearbox repair specialist should be able to source parts for you, or even repair the box.

Hi thanks for your replies, i dont think il risk using a petrol box then unless i can use it for the pump if its cheap. My pump has broken the inpeller inside but it has also scored the inside of the pump casing, problem is the cheapest iv seen a recon pump for is £375 exchange which is fine but im not sure how far to go with this box, everthing inside looks ok although im not sure i want to tackle the pistons, i might risk that there ok. The clutch plates look ok but im not sure how thick they should be, they have grouves/lines on still but no one can give me any tolerances on how much wear is acceptable, as youve probably guessed im trying to do this rebuild on a budget.Originally it was the TC that failed, iv had it rebuilt for £150 and im sure that wouod have cured it as there was not any metal in the oil. When i fitted the tc i did not line it up like an idiot and broke the oil pump.Recon box is not an option now as there exchange and mines in bits. Thanks for the help.

See what your local repairer (don't know where you are) might be able to do? The TC failed on my '05 and the pump ate itself and damaged all sorts of things including the casing but they still fixed it.

I take it you have something like this........

I can see why the pump is a bit pricy as it looks like most of front of the box!! The ZF one is much smaller.
