rear ball joint

Post by x555 » Sat Aug 13, 2011 6:52 pm

I'm finally gonna get around to fixing this sucker soon (if it is the ball joint that is) though it does sound like it from reading other threads.
So any tips or tricks are welcome :D as i cant seem to find a definitive hoe to on here (i'l take a look over the pond i think ;) )
I know Raj and a few others have done this so i'm guessing it's within my capabilities :)
@ Raj ..... do you still have the splitter tool that i could possibly hire? and did you have to press anything back in as i only have basic tools and nothing specialist.

Had a quick look and it requires special tools, but PM me an email address and I will send you the pages anyway as a PDF.

very similar to Lez's subframe bush tool but a little smaller.
I have found a few threads on various forums for 3ers and 5ers so they should help with the fix :) but any extra info is welcome

Hiya buddy. Sorry for the delay.

I've got the BMW tool for the rear ball joints. You can hire it no problem. I'll post up a link of a decent how to for the 7 series but it is exactly the same process. It provides a great list of all the tools needed. In all honesty, it was quite straight forward but very time consuming but more so because I caused my own headache by not releasing the air out of the airbag. This caused a lot of extra tension in the lower arm making it more difficult to remove the extension bolt. Also made it near impossible to get the lower arm lined back up. Quick call to Jason and it was a lot simpler as he told me to remove the airline from the top of the airbag. Once done it was straight forward once again.

For the tool you just need a 24mm spanner.

Pm me if you do need the tool itself.

Raj

Oh forgot to add, the tool comes with the different size heads to both press the old ball joint out and the new one in so no extra tools required.

Here ya go buddy. This is the how to I followed:

http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/50230

As I said, it is for the 7 series, but is identical apart from the airbag. You need to release the air out of the airbag to make the job easier and straight forward. I did this by following Jason's advice and removing the trim from the boot floor to get access to the top of the airbag and then removing the air pipe itself. Job done.

I made exactly the same mistake of not releasing the air from the air bag, even with the tool the balljoint can be mega tight, i couldnt believe how tight it was I thought something was gonna break.
Tip: with the air bag deflated check the other control arm joints for play as any play cant be felt with the air bag inflated. good luck with it.
