3.0 Petrol MPG

Post by kstandsteve » Wed Aug 17, 2011 8:14 pm

The 3.0L Sport isnt the best on fuel economy - I knew that prior to buying one but thought it would be better than it is.

Its an E53 2001 model and an auto.

I am getting 17.0mpg around town and 25mpg on the motorway. As it spends most its time around town its about 18mpg overall.

How does this compare with other owners? If this is below what others are getting any advice on improving.
The car has done 100k miles and has full service history.

Cheers

3.0 Petrol MPG

Post by stevox5 » Wed Aug 17, 2011 9:11 pm

Let's hope it stays that way for a while!
Mine is 2001 and has done 70k and I've just done an inspection2 service and quite a few repairs , it runs like a dream but I agree the fuel consumption does get a little tedious, especially when it's no better than a v8!
Still I really enjoy mine so willing to put up with the economy.

I had one and my overall consumption averaged 23.8mpg.....not great against the V8 versions really as the "small" six cylinder lump has to work quite hard in the big X5 body while the big V8s laze along. I've got a 4.8is now and it gets a better consumption than the 3.0i - have had up to 32mpg on motorway runs. Still, the 3.0i is a nice drive (if you haven't sampled the 4.8 that is!)

Like you Stevo I enjoy the car and at least at present am happy to stick with it.

23.8mpg Condor? Thats good - no way can I get mine to that average.
I have heard that its similar to the 4.8i consumption which does seem bizarre. What is your road tax and insurance cost compared to the 3.0L?
And no I havent sampled a 4.8i as yet!

I'm getting the same to, but my avg is around 21 mixed

Yes on a run the V8 will do the same if not more, but i bet it's easy to get them in to single figures with a bit of a blast down some A-B roads.

I had a 2004 3.0 and around town it did about 21 - mostly very short journeys 6 miles or less. On the motorway at 75 indicated it did about 27. Sold it to another forum member - would be inerested to hear his experiences (Pete: are you out there stll?!)

My 4.6 shows 18.5 mpg over 2500 miles of all sorts of motoring. Usually revving to less than 3500 as thats all you need ;), thats from the computer and running on gas, so reckon on 15 mpg realistically.

Well, I've got a light foot :D the consumption is all down to the weight/power ratio of car body to engine, but yes, it does seem weird at first!
Road tax was £215 and insurance is £380 a year (but I qualified for Saga  this year) - my previous insurers came back with £980!!! My 3.0i was more expensive to insure pre-Saga days!!!!
If you sample a 4.8 the 3.0i will never seem quite the same again...... :fuelfire:

20 -21 average on the computer for me lots of mileage and varied driving. Mine is lpg converted though so probably around 32+ equivalent and 40+ on a run.

As a side note I am currently using a brand new s350CDI merc and it averages 37+ and over 45 on a run and its fast - really fast. Goes to show newer big exec cars are getting real life decent figures from diesel engines!
