2005 X5 Problems (including Panoramic Roof)
Re: 2005 X5 Problems
Hi Taffy, you should definitely persist. The sunroof is extremely stiff when winding it back manually,it took me about 15 mins and two very sore thumbs just to get the sunroof to the fully open position !! Once you are there it is a very easy fix, when you look at the rails to start with it is a little confusing as the pdf shows a sunroof already out of the car. If you need any help or a couple of photos to help you along your way then just ask. It is a very satisfying feeling when you have done the job especially knowing that you are not lining BMW's pockets any further.
Re: 2005 X5 Problems
If you are struggling with an Alan Key... use an Alan Key fitting on a ratchet / socket set. You can get these from Halfords.

Re: 2005 X5 Problems
Neil48is firstly thankyou for your replies so far, am I right in thinking that when you had a problem with your sunroof it would only open in the vent position like mine and the rear section of the sunroof wouldn't close also neither the main section or the blind would operate whilst pushing the switch in the forward or reverse position? I have just tried again to open it manually but after opening it approx 2" it becomes really stiff, I am going to try and get a better Alan key as Turk suggests, but it really don't feel as if it will open anymore. Also am I right in thinking that if I manage to open the sunroof and carry out this fix then all I need to do is synchronize the sunroof and hopefully the blind and sunroof will operate as normal.
Re: 2005 X5 Problems
Have you managed to close the rear section by pushing he mechanism back manually with a screwdriver etc ? If the rear section is open the blind will not close,in order to do this the sunroof closes fully and then then the blind slides forward. Likewise for the fully opening function. I closed the rear section of mine by putting a long screwdriver into the two holes that are just visible towards the rear of the sunroof. Once you've finished its just a case of re-syncing the sunroof like you say.
Re: 2005 X5 Problems
Yes the rear section is closed but the blind will not close, also I have noticed when I open the front section manually to close it with the button it only inches forward and I have to push the button a few times till it reaches the closed position. as for the blind I dont seem to be able to get any movement whatsoever from it, Looks like a bit of a lost cause!!!!
Re: 2005 X5 Problems
Have you tried re-syncing the sunroof already ?
Re: 2005 X5 Problems
I haven't, but my local BMW dealer tried a couple of days ago but couldn't get it to work, however I really don't think they were interested as they were really busy and I asked them to look at my parking sensors and they reported they were fine when clearly they are not! so not really happy with them.
Re: 2005 X5 Problems
Yep seems to be the case these days. I managed to fix my sunroof while in the middle of replacing just about all of the self levelling suspension components at a cost of nearly £2K, so i wasn't about to spend anymore on a sunroof, particularly a part of the sunroof that has virtually no purpose !!! I would try the re-sync yourself first and then maybe have a search around on xoutpost.com for any similar symptoms. I'm pretty sure that the sunblind should close no matter what, so long as the rest of the roof is closed.
Re: 2005 X5 Problems (including Panoramic Roof)
With admin cap, (& for benefit of others later), on I have edited title at top of thread to include the search term : Panoramic
The sunroof repair centre that you spoke of sounds good in event you don't manage to sort this going down the d.i.y. route
I cant see mentionon it on scan reading but there is a BMW repair kit for the Panoramic, (aka Pan), roof.
IIRC Alfamale got an independent garage to repair his car with it seem to recall he sold the car on having prior bought it from a member on here when initially in need of some tlc & before all items sorted. The same car may have been passed on to another member on here - Please forgive me for my poor memory as I cant recall every car owned by every member.
Good Luck
