My 2001 X5 without DSP and with mk2 nav has the sound cut out when I hit hard bumps. As soon as I skip to the nect track or switch sound source (FM -> CD or vice versa) it usually comes back. Although on one occassion it didn't come back and when turned the ignition off the dash said "tail light fault" "brake light fault" and "check number plate light". When I turned it back on the sound was back.
My thoughts are a possible earth problem (as the lights were affected on that one occasion) which is only highlighted when hitting the bump and is fine again straight after.
Anyone know where the amp/lights are earthed? Or have any other suggestions?
Thanks

Generally this is attibuted to corroded contacts on the modules/plugs. They're all located in the bowels of the boot in quite a hostile environment really, which also means they're a pita to get at but a systematic unplugging and cleaning is the cheapest, though tiresome first step.

I see. Are there any plugs on particular units I should be looking at first? I'm guessing the BM54 would be the first culprit to check?
Out of interest, I have my LPG tank in my spare wheel well so I can't easily get to whats under there. What is under there, apart from the battery?

Help - intermittent sound cut outs
Found the source of this - dry solder joints on my bm24 unit. I took it out and resoldered it and it has been fine since. 5 minute fix, £3.99 soldering iron.
If anyone has the same problem I will give more info on the fix. My symptoms were simple - hit a bump, sound cuts out. Power off or change track and it usually comes back again. Very annoying
