2005 X5 Problems (including Panoramic Roof)

Hi I have just purchased my 2005 3.0l D X5, I have a few problems and was wondering if anyone has had the same issues, the panoramic sunroof opens fine but the rear section of the roof wont close! BMW charged me £90 to tell me that it might be the rear visor motor but it will cost a further £200 to carry out a check!!!! also my parking sensors seem to work fine when reversing, but when I drive off it continuously beeps and the light illuminates on the sensor button until I press it, BMW checked and said all ok but this happens every time I engage reverse!!!! They also warned me that the Brand new tyres that have been fitted were not star rated and that I should replace them!!!!!! they also advised that I fit a crankcase breather kit at a cost of £150, any advice will be appreciated.

There is loads on the forum and net about Pano roof problems. I am concerned about what your saying. You said something about BMW replacing an item. Did you buy the car from BMW as if you did their AUC warranty will be invaluable?

No I didnt purchase from BMW, bought it privately and booked into my local bmw dealer to give a check over and look at sunroof, just a bit disappointed that having spent £90 they then tell me that I need to spend another £200 just to try and find out what the problem is.

Ok fair enough. I certainly believe that using BMW for somethings is required but many of us at some point have used their diagnostic service and found that we have only been told what we knew already

There are people on here with Pano roofs that can advise and I am sure will help you. X555 has had many problems with his PDC's and I am sure he may be able to help

Hi Explorer, Tyres are Atturo 315/35/20 on back and 275/40/20 on front, they said crank case breather as I sometimes get a bit of black smoke from the exhaust under acceleration, the car has just turned 90000 miles and has a full BMW service history.

If you have a bit of diy nowse and some tools you can change the breather yourself. It was a 'Hot Topic' a few months back so a search of this site should come up with a series of results and piccies. It will cost you less than £150 too. It's not a difficult job, but it does need some disassembly and several of us have done it successfully. It's a good idea to change the air filter too.

Pano roofs are indeed a problem, and the rear section particularly. A fair number of people have has complete replacements fitted. To get at the rear motor, it is necessary to take the headlining down, so £200 does not surprise me.

BMW can be a bit 'sniffy' about anything that they don't fit themselves. Tyres are something that a number of manufacturers are careful about as 'technically' the tyres in use should only be the types that the manufacturers homologate their vehicles with. That doesn't mean that out of warranty you are forced to only use 'OEM Approved' tyres, just that the manufacturer would prefer you to use only the 'right' ones. You are completely at liberty to ignore them

Hi X5Sport, thanks for reply, £200 was for diagnostic only, not to fix, they said it would cost extra once they carried out second diagnostic check, therefore I will be £290 out of pocket and then I might now what the problem is.

I can well believe it. I got billed £250 a few years ago to find a single wire out in ny radio! One dealer tried to charge me £500 to screw around with my tracking device and not find the fault. That bill did not get paid.

If you can, find an Indy in your area.

Taffy, I don't want to add to your woe, but that sun roof cassette is notoriously expensive - around the £2K mark and is said to be really difficult to do. Jobs that cost around £200 at BMW dealers are actually very minor ones. If you post up your approx location, people may be able to give you names of indys.
Don't worry about your tyres - they are a budget make, but provided they are legal and you're happy with them, its not a problem as the car is not on a factory warranty. Hope you get sorted.

Taffy, is it the full rear section of the Sunroof or is it one side getting stuck? The pano roof is a problem area and something I would advise anyone buying to test a number of times. I had mine replaced and luckily I was under warranty but yes it would have been around 2k as Condor says.

Try and give a few more details about the sunroof, maybe even pics, before you shell out another £200 to BMW.

Hi all, and thanks for all your replies

Both sections of the sunroof open, but only the main front section closes, the back section stays completely up and doesn't move at all. I would probably live with it if I could use just the front main section of the sunroof as that works fine. Does anyone know if I could detach something to stop the rear section opening? Shame really as the car is in really good condition and has a cracking spec. Or does anyone know of any decent garages near Newport in S.Wales who might be able to help out with this.

Here i come to save the day !!! I have had and fixed the exact same problem with the Pano roof. Whatever you do, do not let the main dealer touch it, if and i mean a big IF they try to fix it they will charge you hundreds of pounds £1K+ but the majority of the time they will advise that a whole new sunroof cassette is the only option and these are around £2.5K fitted. I managed to fix mine following this very useful how to. It literally took 10 minutes to sort. The only downside is that the rear section of the roof will never work again. The front section and sunblind all work as intended. It is a very small price to pay when faced with the alternatives. It is not the rear motor at fault !!! Trust me !!

Hi again, I got all excited when I read Neil48is reply, but unfortunately I didn't realise that several other functions not working with my sunroof, A bit embarrassed I have to admit that I didn't realise the sunroof opened fully I just thought it opened in the vent position, wasn't until I read some of the fixing pdf that I realised this!!!!!! Therefore I was unable to carry out the fix as I cant gain access due to being unable to fully open main sunroof, I have tried manually but could only open about 2" as it was extremely stiff and felt as if Allen key might break, sunroof would go to closed position after this by using the switch. Not sure if I should persist and try and free up or take it to a place I have spoken to in Bristol called Bristol Sunroof Centre who do the full repair on these sunroofs, they have done work directly for BMW and have quoted that if a full repair is required for this style of sunroof it would cost £600 plus vat which is a hell of a lot cheaper than taking to BMW.
