Oil Leaks

Post by baldguy » Tue Jun 21, 2011 4:20 pm

So my X has sprung a couple of leaks... the first being from the rocker cover gaskets leaking, from what I can find on the web, this is a common occurance unless any of you guys can tell me otherwise. The car has done 85k miles and is a 2001 model..

The next is coming from apparently a seal (not the rear main) behind the torque converter, the gearbox side.. this is a drip every now and then. Does anyone know of this one?

I'm going to monitor this one but get the Rockers done... in your opinion what sort of costs should i expect to change the rocker gaskets on a 4.4?

Cheers

Oil Leaks

I did the rocker cover gaskets on mine and although the LPG conversion added to the complication it was an absolute pig of a job, so I would expect to pay upwards of £500. The parts alone were well over £200. Make sure you get PCV hoses done at the same time and that ALL the rocker cover gaskets and the bolt seals are replaced too.
Good time to replace your plugs as well of course.

So heads up.... Rocker gaskets were leaking although thats the least of my worries..... pipes under the inlet manifold are leaking and mixing with the oil from the rockers.... so now its a huge job.. if this piece of crap doesnt start behaving its back to a Jeep for me!!!
To say i'm annoyed is an understatement!!!

Water pipes? I guess that's the valley pan then? Doesn't sound cheap :(

The valley pan is easy to do. Once the inlet manifold is off......
But I think he means the emissions pipes.

Oh PCV hoses. They are relatively easy to do. The cause of the rocker cover gasket failure.

So various oil breather hoses need replacing along with the leaking "V" cover, water pipes, rocker gaskets etc etc.... A bill of just of 1k will land my way on Thursday/Friday.... Now the fight is on with the dealer i bought it from just over a month ago.... I'll keep you updated....

Just got it back today.... Loads of breather pipes replaces, valley pan, rocker gaskets, remove and refit water pump properly, remove and refit water pipes in valley pan/replace and refit... all breathers either blocked or fell apart... All new BMW parts fitted... So basically the car couldnt breathe and was throwing oil out of wherever it could.... Monitor over the next couple of days but the garage ran it for 50 or so miles and had it running in workshop and all bone dry...... re-gaining confidence slowly.....
