Re: E53 2003 X5 3.0i auto gear box help
Really good spec there, looks good. And if the dealers a good 'un and gets the box sorted, its a lovely car. I don't think you'll get any fault codes from the box, BTW, as its an internal oil leak past a seal, it won't trigger a fault code. The "trick" of putting it in reverse and Sport Mode a few times is the way to be able to use it from cold, also well known. But I wouldn't be able to live with a box behaving like that - hopefully your dealer knows a good indy who has a rebuild available or will change the seal on yours- let the dealer know what the fault is so he has a good idea, otherwise they may mess about with software and all sorts of other things which will NOT cure the leak past the seal!!!
Sounds like from what your saying it's a seal, I'll ring erm back before work on monday and inform them of the pos cause or fix for the seal. Does any body no where I can advise the dealers where to take it. Rotherham Doncaster or Sheffield are easy to get to.

Ok so the dealer as rung me back today, 5 mins ago and ask me to ring service up first thing in the morn. I informed him it may just be a seal that needs replacing, i also asked if your guys can't do it, do you send it out to a Specialist, he said yes Quarry Motors in sheffield.
So sounds good, and i'll keep you informed of the out come.

I would suggest that if the box has failed so soon after purchase then it is likely you can reject it as not being of 'merchantable quality', or whatever the correct phraseology is, and demand they either fix it, or give you your money back. Fault codes may not necessarily show up and although they are a guide, dealers do try to rely totally on them rather than using their mechanical skills to work out that there really is an issue. I've had issues a few times with the E53 that threw no errors, and it took one of the older guys in the workshop to find it from 1st principles rather than what the computer did (or often didn't) report.
You're looking at a substantial bill to rebuild the transmission - around £2k.

Re: E53 2003 X5 3.0i auto gear box help
Hopefully it will be a seal as you say, I like this car and it's got a very good spec. Dint find another like this in the little time I looked.
When I asked about it when I phoned them up, the bloke said if no faults come up they do send it out to a Specialist, Quarry Motors in sheffield. So all been well it's a seal and it can and will be fixed with out any problems. I have ask them to keep me informed and will remind them on thursday when I drop it off.
I will phone up Friday just to make sure that when they tried to drive it first thing, that it dint move. I started back at work on Monday after been off stick. When I got in after my shift it worked, so needs more then 7hrs to not work. It will be left at the garage for about 15hrs so it should deff not work.
Let yous no and up date when more info is at hand, helps others later.

Re: E53 2003 X5 3.0i auto gear box help
Well up date time
Just got a call from the dealers, gear box is fixed. Don't get it back till monday, tuesday, as it needs the dint removing. The bloke i spoke to said it was stripped down, cleaned checked, ordered some parts. What parts was ordered he was not sure because the dilan dint ask.
So my question is will putting fresh oil in mask the problem, if this is all what as been done. Just hope they ordered more than just a gasket seal and oil.

Re: E53 2003 X5 3.0i auto gear box help
I would not expect fresh transmission fluid to really make a difference unless the old fluid was filthy. Some say it does, others not. See if you can get a list of parts that have been replaced. If they've stripped and cleaned it, I would expect that at the very least they will have had to fit a new seals kit as well as new gaskets, and hopefully a new filter.
Glad you're getting it back though.

yep filter to, i'll ask when i pick it up for a list of what was done. Just hope it's fixed cos a go away for 2 weeks on the 18th, so if it's ok when i get it back it will be stud for a while. This then should bring up any faults with the box, if it was not done right.
cheers
