Mike reckons they are just after my home address.
I've contacted the "real" seller and alerted her to this and am waiting to hear back from her again.
I phoned Greater Manchester Police who said they cannot actually do anything as no money has changed hands and because the real owner is in Essex and the fake one is in Scotland that it is out of their jurisdiction so can only take the registration number and put it on their files in case someone else rings in with the same problem.

Home address is the most likely here, most people assume they want you to transfer money before seeing the car and they get away without having the motor at all, but now people do very sneaky things to get money! My guesses are one of 3.
1) They ask you to get cash and then meet then in a public area or in a bank/police station or somewhere you're comfortable, making you at ease and happy, they'll want to meet early morning a few hours from your place of residence so you get the money the day before, they have your address and come to rob you the night before, or follow you when you leave.............. £2800 is easy to withdraw and carry around and most people wont be too bothered about having that sort of cash in their pocket for a bargain!
2) You go to collect the car or test drive it with a chunk of dosh in your pocket, they're there and they rob you.
3) They have your address, wait until you trave to meet for the cars test drive, then they rob your empty house. However maybe the first or second is more likely.
All 3 scenarios, they rob you!!!
Caveat emptor! If it seems too good to be true, is usually is!
