X Drivers - Is this a bent advert or trader??

Post by storminmike » Sun Jun 19, 2011 9:27 pm

This seems like someone or two people is/are listing the same car BMW X5 in 2 different places

Vastly different prices, different locations

Is this cloning to get money from the unwary?

One is on EBAY and one is on Autotrader

EBAY NT55HAU BUY IT NOW 15,250.00 - Chelmsford, Essex, United Kingdom

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... EF:GB:1123

Defo summat wierd going on there. It may not be cloning, but it could be a relation split, or a chancer? The use of English isn't quite right either. I see one add says 'moving abroad', and that may well be genuine. The different prices are definitely ringing alarm bells though.....

An email to the ebay seller would give an interesting result though I suspect.

EDIT: The Autotrader entry is now coming up as an error as of 21:49 19/06/11 :?

What get me is that if you visit the cheap lik you find other cars with equally bizzare prices and untraceable email links...different ones too

edit
I've emailed the Autotrader link to confirm the price

Anything without a phone number, and a Hotmail acct is 100% suspicious!! See my comment about the AutoTrader one vanishing!

THE ANSWER

http://www.cardealermagazine.co.uk/publ ... yers/52641
DEALERS are being warned after a number of garages have said their Auto Trader websites have been ‘hacked’.

Several dealers have been in touch with Car Dealer with tales of woe after their accounts with the online classified website were compromised.

One said the prices on their adverts were changed and the telephone number altered so customers were directed to the fraudsters instead..................................Someone hacked our website and changed the prices of some of the cars to very cheap. There was a link for the customer to follow to enter bank details to pay for the car then a promise of delivery. Obviously the car doesn’t turn up.’

Just received this e mail back from the supposed owner of the car............................

Hello,

The 2005 BMW X5 3.0D is still available for £2800.

The car is in excellent condition, garage kept and accident free. Has done only 74000 miles and comes with full service history. The car looks and works just fine and I never had problems with it. It comes with MOT (valid till 11/2011) and Road Tax ( valid till 09/2011). I am the registered keeper of the car and I have all the original papers.

I must tell you that right now we are in the Northern part of United Kingdom we bought a big farm here in a beautiful sea-side city called Thurso.
We are a couple of pensioners (I have 64 and my beloved wife is 63 years old). If you are really interested we are ready to make a trip to England and meet you personally next week. You can take the car for a test-drive and any kind of inspection.
Please tell us where do you live? I am sure we can arrange a meeting, a region acceptable for us and for you in the same time.

P.S. I appreciate if we can continue our conversation by e-mail. The mobile signal is poor here, we have to walk over 2 miles for a good phone call.

Thank you and let me know,
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question is now, do i contact the REAL owner who is selling it on ebay, and do i let THEM contact the police, or should i contact the police too?

So what happens then if you say you want to meet them?
And I just love the PS, it's just... too much!

But joke apart, that's why my ad on autotrader for my 3 series got deleted, I don't have a UK phone number and they thought I was a scammer of some sort... bummer!
