no sound ??

Post by ayat » Thu Apr 28, 2011 10:26 pm

hi all, im sure this topic has been discussed but not sure if i have the same problem. basicly i have no sound whatsoever, the orange power light when u press the left hand knob on the sat nav monitor doesnt come on, so the radio doesnt even come on to tune and there is no sound. i remember rcm modules been culprits when sound is lost from one side, is it just the amp? rcm module i know is quite costly. sure the amp has been replaced in the past but was probably second hand. thanks ayat.

Have you checked the relevant fuses. Not sure which fuse if any in the front
fuse box but worth checking fuses 72,73,74,75 rear fuse box .

I had a similar problem that i couldnt get the orange light to come on & had no sound or radio.

All i did was disconnect the battery for a few minutes & this cured the problem straight away, couldnt believe how much i enjoyed having radio & cd on until this happened!

Hope you get it sorted.

Have this problem myself now no sound, amber light or audio displays.

Have disconnected battery then reconnected as well as checking fuses 7,72 & 73.........No joy !

I assume radio module is the green box forward of the battery so will check connections there for fit & corrosion, (is WD40 okay to use ?).

I think my 12/01 build car has BM24 module - female voice that talks alongside music audio.

Worthy of comment I prior had evaporation from old battery which was missing a vent plug on one end so this could have caused some minor contact corrosion.

Any advice or pointers appreciated as keen to avoid spending silly money to sort this.

Has sound gone suddenly for both of you? Could be something else?

But BM24 is nearest you when facing the boot and looking at battery. It's under the cover and has the quadlock attached. Should be possible to take that out without further removal (pins will be round). I hear lots about dry solder joints on these but if it's the RCM then usually one/two corners go, not all corners... Hence the ask.

Also check unit doesn't have it's own fuse (sorry just can't remember if they do - I have the BM54). One bolt holding it to the plastic frame will allow the whole unit to squeeze out past the frame and battery - if same setup as face-lift models.

Bit early but dry solders on THESE units said to be 'fixable' by put the unit in the oven! Theory being solder melts back but I wouldn't know if or whether it will cause other issues. Not my first choice.

I should correct myself.....pretty sure mine is BM54.

Will try to take it all out and check connections 1st to module under battery then to amp.

Any more specific info on the exact location of seperate, (big red) fuse appreciated.

IF it's on the module then you'll see it pretty much there. BM54 not known to just die??? Mine is out on front right only, Jig has had front right go, then loads of crackling and then front left. So it's progressive rather than immediate failure.

Thanks Sanj :)

Checked prior mentioned fuses again and had the BM54 module out.... small 5A fuse checked & seemingly visibly intact, no signs of breakage or burn out to same, unfortunately I didn't have a spare 5A mini-blade fuse that size to hand....so couldn't do a swap test. Checked all connections to the radio module which appeared okay from what I could see, removed the multi plug to same & checked wire connections into back of same as best I could.

Whilst I had battery out I familiarised myself with other boxes there, a NAV module sat to front of BM54, PDC module rearward of BM54 & ABS module to right and front of BM54. There was a stainless steel metal box to right of BM54 and seemingly not containing much inside it........Is this the amp or is it under the CD changer in the nearside cubby ?

Anything else worth a check ?

Would a GT1 or Autologic diagnostic pinpoint things better ?

Of course the other option is to find a kindly member local to me & who is happy to let give an hours so I can quickly connect their module to my car to check if my problem is down to module or other issue........Perhaps someone can 1st confirm this test process won't be damaging to the temporarily donated module
.........if nobody local I am mindful Jason had a spared BM54 so may have to speak nicely to him.

Oh & btw I have so far resisted the temptation to bake my radio module ;) ........It would be fair to say this would be last resort if I confirmed it was dead and I had little to lose from doing this..........nothing ruled out at this stage though.

You have the BM54 - do NOT bake it. That fix was solely for the older module.

There are a number of small boxes in the same area - PDC/ABS,etc. But I have no idea on the one you mention. The amp location sounds the same as mine.

Presume a refit of all connections has not helped? Hope the fuse is the culprit! :(

Diagnostic kits will point to the module most likely but nothing more. If you have access you could try, just for the sake of it/your insanity.

Jason may be able to help but you have a month's wait - he's back in Asia. That ear-piece will never come off now. :D

I know swapping the units causes NO issues whatsoever. If you're that close to coming to Jason's I'm 10-15 miles away from him and happy to help swap and test. BUT if you call them, sure Pedro/Dom/Raj will oblige anyway without issue/charge. ;)

If this is indeed the problem unit there is the option to solder direct to the board and get new outputs. These would then need to be connected to an external amp. Not ideal but vast reduction in cost. eBay sellers quoting huge prices but got mine done for a lot less. Cross that bridge if/when you need to.

Thanks Sanj

I will try swapping out the small fuse, (albeit it looked fine), & go from there.

All fuses checked including one on back of module all seem fine.

Spoke to indy today & my next effort will be to check integrity of wiring/power supply. If that's all good then looks like I will need another module or a repair to same. Need to be certain which module I have before arranging repair or sourcing a replacememt so will check part number & pins to confirm which module I have.

Once I confirm what module & source a useable circuit tester it would be good to know which specific pins to check.

Car electrics & wiring woes not my strong areas knowledge/experience areas though keen to work at this so that I can check basics.

Have posted elsewhere re circuit testers etc.......Will be appreciative if anyone with info on these can check posts & look there too if able to give input.

Hi AW

Just looked at the BM54 thats out of my car at the moment and I have a 10amp fuse in mine and not a 5amp.

Where is West Sussex are you? Im working in Bagshot this week and still have the BM54 and headunit sitting on top of my wardrobe at the moment so easy to chuck in the car if you wanted to try a swap out.

Thanks......need to check pins paying attention to confirm once & for all what unit I have. As it's a 12/01 build I suspect its a BM53 unit. realoem link here

Over 90 mins from Bagshot so not easy for either of us.

If I have BM53 unit then I think I would need plug adaptor kit to test your BM54 to run off existing harness.

Oh & yes it was a 10A fuse I swapped out from back of the unit.

Need to get this sorted as driving me nuts not having any sounds.

Did this happen after a battery disconnect? HRH's radio died after a battery change and it took the Indy dealer a week to work back through all the circuits to find what the issue was. They basically had to pull half the car to bits and then suddenly it all worked. The only clue we had was that a main power fuse for the conv roof (30A) had blown and this caused issues with the other electronics. Worth a check to see if a completely unrelated fuse has gone.
:ant: Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

Not related to a reboot as far as I can recall. I will try testing feeds in then if all good will try a swap out of module - maybe with another member. This should eliminate things. If all else fails I will check every fuse.

Very annoying.......both the failure & tasks ahead.
