4.8is Blown Diff !!!

Does anybody know what ratio the front diff is on a 4.8is . Are they 4.8 specific or the same as other models ?

What on earth happened to cause a diff to fail?

Good question really,just about got the car finished,just having a few mechanical issues sorted,new airbags on the front struts too mention a few. We noticed a pool of gear oil in the undertray and assumed it had come from the leaking O/S drive shaft seal but on further inspection found the casing busted open and one of the gears sitting on top of the subframe !!! Possibly thinking that the diff has been run out of oil completely and suffered a catastrophic failure !!! According to ETK the later 3.0D and 4.8is share the same part number for the diff but i need to confirm this before i take the plunge.

I had all my diff seals replaced by BMW under Warranty. Seems that they can leak and therefore if gone un-noticed could cause a failure, however, I would have thought that before this happened you would have noticed a drone type noise?

Not sure of the Parts but I would imagine that they are the same as they wouldn't have made a new diff design just for the 4.8is - there is more torque going through the diff on the 3.0d so it should more than cope.

Thats the problem with damaged cars,bit like a box of chocolates !!! Dying to drive the car,just a few little hurdles to overcome,my mechanic got the new airbags on the struts last night,so thats one less thing to worry about.

I posted a link on the thread for Stolen Wing Mirrors... it was an X5 that was being broken due to being Vandilised. I'm sure the diffs would be fine from that so long as they are still available and you can use the diff from a 3.0d - Just have to check the Diff gearing.
