Compact Wheel vs Spare Wheel.

Its not a 17" spare so there!!!! Well not in my car anyway! I also wouldn't take the Owners Manual as being bibilical and freakishly correct in every possible way!! It is written for a load of models, the 4.8 being only one of them, and minor changes also occurred in between printing owners manuals and new releases!
I don't have a compact or spacesaver wheel in my 4.8 and its not a 17" !! But its also not worth falling out with everyone over it!!

I'm happy to take a pic of it if you like, 20" wheels are too wide for any load floor, extendable or not, to fit over them. They fit in the well but are too high for the load floor to lie flat.[/quote]

Calm Down there, I have only asked a genuine question! To of which you dont know the anwser to. You say you have a spare wheel but still dont confirm on which size it actually is!!!

I was only trying to find out if the 20" spare would fit the well,with the floor sitting flat.

Thanks to x555 for the pics, we now know it doesn't fit so that the flooring is correctly flat. Which i personally couldn't live with.


Its now a case of knowing what is the biggest size spare that would fit with a level rear floor.

Do you actually know which size spare you have?

BTW i dont intend to fall out with anyone. Smart arse replys with no positive feedback are very unwelcomed.

You were the one with the "smart arse replies", I'm afraid. Your original post asked if the 20" wheel as fitted to 4.8is fitted in the spare wheel area. This has been answered several times now. The load cover will not lie flat if you put a 20" wheel in it.

Your original post did not ask the size of everyone elses wheels, you wanted to know the biggest size that would fit in the spare wheel area. Any wheel with the same rolling diameter will fit the spare wheel space, but may mean the load floor cannot lie flat.

You stated that we all had 17" wheels or a compact/saver as a spare "because the owners manual says so". That is simply not accurate and is not the case. Owners manuals are notoriously inaccurate when it comes to model-specific options and changes across the range, and the E53 manual was written for multiple models, all of which had some differences to each other.

This is a happy, pleasant forum with lots of helpful members. We don't all need to be instructed by a new member that we're all stupid and have a particular option on our X5es because "the owners manual says so". Or that other forum members may only contribute if you consider the responses "welcome" - its a lighthearted forum with friendly banter at times and everyone is welcome to contribute I think you'll find!

If you want a different spare to the one you have, fine. The question you asked about a 20" wheel fitting the spare tyre area has clearly been answered.

This is not the case im afraid. The answer to my question was only answered by member X555 who also supplied photo proof too. which was to memory 2 post back form this present post. I did not give any smart arse replys, You stated you had a spare with no ifo on which actual size it is. And still haven't!

I'm also well aware the rolling diameter would be fine. it would have been the depth of the well to be the problem to fit a 20" wheel!!!!

Actually, several people pointed out that 20" wheels fitted the well but would stand proud and the load floor would not lie flat, I was one, Sapphireblack another, Turks alluded to it, too. So you're wrong there. And no-one is expected to provide "photo proof" to anyone else on here about anything- as it happened x555 had a photo which he had sourced from another site which shows it quite clearly.

And for the record, I'm female, so not a chap, so you're wrong there too. Assumptions about such matters are never a good idea....... However, you're right about the fact that I'm friendly, most of the time, anyway!

Hope your spare wheel dilemma is sorted soon.

So, it would be good to know how deep the wheel well is, and if someone has time when cleaning their car this weekend can they please measure the depth? I will when I get home (in July!!!) but that maybe too late.

A 20" could possibly still be utilised as a spare by building up the height of the floor with MDF, nicely shaped with a cut out in the middle, and thus raising the floor hwoever much required. Sounds like the perfect task for x555 to do with his MDF carpentry skills

Sounds like a good idea all be it a lot of work involved. Not to sure if the flooring panel would then fit into its correct position onced raised

It seems another one of Bmw's designs is fair from sopt on!!!

You think they would have made the wheel well to fit a 20" spare wheel which the car runs as standard

Ok so just to put this one to bed lads/lasses i have had a little dig and found the old thread where i got that piccy from (how very sad i know you think i would have better things to do on my wed anniversary )
It seems that you can't fit an oem 20" style weel in the boot without modifications.

Nice find x555.

When i eventually get my vehicle back i'll do some experimenting with my 20" alloys and see whats to be done to try and fit a full size 20" spare wheel. I personally wont like to do away with the boot floor to acheive this. But i will have a play around and see what suits my needs the best.
