Ahh well another new part needed!!

Post by x555 » Tue Apr 26, 2011 8:17 pm

Mrs x555 has told me on several occasions now that the drivers door handle is playing up and sometimes won't open the door without a good rattle of the handle
So today it finally failed on me and i have been unlocking the car on the remote and keeping the button pressed down so's to lower the windows and then use the interior handle to open the door....which was ok in the sunshine but now it's raining is gonna be APITA and i'm gonna look like a plum doing so
So i stripped it all down earlier and tried the Sanj quick fix method with the cable tie but to no avail :headbang: i also broke the outer door handle when re putting it on where the clips lock in from an angle as per Sanj's thread. It must not have been all the way in and the locating clips snapped off :headbang:
So i need a new carrier now and door handle part :headbang:

On a plus note ....while the door card was off i did manage to fix the rattle that happened when shutting the door (only with the window down) as i noticed that the nut had come completlry off that secures the window lifting mech :D

Out of interest the carrier had failed in exactly the same place as Jeegnesh's so must be the week link in the mech.

Sorry to hear of your woes. At least you tried to fix it :-)

It's becoming a labour of love for you recently! Don't give up.

Well i have my new carrier ready to fit along with a new oill filter ready for a service.
It will be nice to not wait for mrs x555 or my daughter to reach across and open the door for me from the inside
That is when i get around to fitting it mind :)

Image

@ Sanj...too tricky to weld mate as it was so small and on a moving part ....not even sure if it was weldable to be honest and didn't fancy having to take it all apart again when it breaks being such a fidley job ;) ....i think i prefered doing the subframe bushes to that poxy small fingered job

Well i now have a working door handle again :D :trampoline: :yeah:
My wallet is a few quid lighter even after the provoked dealer discount :( but all is working again.

On a positive note i bagged a BNIB grab handle part of ebay for the princely sum off £11.94 inc delivery :D :D

This how to has been done by Sanj etc so just a few pics from me........

here's where mine failed......
Image
This bit should be whole for the rod to pass through..
Image

I then tried to do a 'Sanj fix it' with a cable tie but no luck :(
Image

new against old carrier..
Image

One thing i will add (and tag on to Sanj's how to if need be) is to be very carefull with the grab handle when taking off/ replacing or you may strip the locating lugs like i did  :headbang: and there not cheap to replace

To get the handle off undo the 8mm nut here.....
Image

then swing the handle down like this (with the door handle pulled outwards away from the car door ;)
Image

Once it has turned about 90 degrees like this it will pull out...
Image

Here's a pic of the back of the locating hole where the two locating tabs lock in place.....
Image

All in not a hard job but a very fiddly one ...... btw when doing this job have the window up to gain access to the carrier and lock ;)
When re fitting door grab handle push the handle mech outwards from the inside off the door and then push the part into its locating hole and turn.I say this as if you try to re locate it with the handle mech down the grab part doesnt go all the way in and you will strip the locating lugs off (like this heavy handed twat   ) it will also prevent you scratching the car door ;)

Nice one! Great to get things sorted!

Would maybe be useful to change the title of this thread or do a separate How-To so that people can find it?

I'm glad it's holding at moment. Just keep telling yourself it could be worse. At least that's what I keep telling myself! Imagine if you were like me and thought a Big End was a disparaging remark :-)
