Hello, soon to be E71 X6 40d owner

Post by dubbers » Fri May 20, 2011 4:34 pm

Hello,

Just placed an order for an X6 40d in white with Cotswold BMW. Hopefully it will arrive before the end of June for family holiday duties (a trip to Bergerac, France).

Great website with useful information, and I'll post some pics when the car arrives.

Ed :)

Welcome aboard. As a fellow 40d owner, I can safely say you'll love it :D

Had mine 6 months now and the grin when I apply the power hasn't gone yet. :driving:

Thanks for the welcome - yes got my E-series numbers wrong! (now edited) :)

Looking forward to driving it - It's our replacement for an X3 and Alpina D3BT Coupe, which were both great cars but I hankered for the style and going back to the twin turbo 3 litre diesel (had a 535d a couple of years ago)

The 8spd transmission is smoooooooth and the power delivery means you will make errrrr 'Progress'. I've only done 2600 miles in mine so it's not even close to being run in, but it sure does go!!

How do you find the run flat tyres in terms of comfort/road noise and handling? I've opted for the trick rear dampers (self levelling suspension) in the hope that it will improve the ride quality.

Also have to admit that I didn't have chance to test drive a demo car - tho' did read numerous reviews over the years about how well the x6 handled the twisties. :driving:

Our car will be mostly slogging round motorways in the midlands, so the performance and fuel economy were important considerations when shopping around for larger 4x4s - BMW really does seem to have class leading specs compared with other german car makers. The plan is to keep the x6 for 3-4 years (about 60-80k miles).

There are a couple of mods I'm considering. The 50i exhaust finishers as discussed on a thread on xdrivers. A trip to Superchips (who have dealt with a number of my previous cars) and a detail with autodetox.

Being a 'performance' car the ride is firm but that means the handling is excellent. In terms of tyre roar, yes there is a bit and it is a little noisier on the Style 214 20" wheels with the Dunlop tyres than the Style 168 19" set with Pirelli winter tyres that I also have. That's not to say it's bad or annoying though. Just turn up the audio system a bit :D I think it's a general thing with run flat tyres that the stiffer sidewalls do transmit more noise.

What spec have you chosen?

My dealer and I missed what was then option 6NF (smartphone audio) so I am just awaiting the completion of testing of a kit being put together in Poland by a BMW Expert and that should enable the full 6NR option as well. After that then it's the 50i tailpipes (which I think should be a factory option!).

Richard,

Thanks for the heads up about the runflats - My first foray into BMW ownership, a 120d Sport had run flats and spent a few pounds changing to different manufacturers and then in the end choosing to go the non run flat route - Which did improve the steering alacrity. My 5er was specced with 172M wheels so didnt have run flats, and the X3 had all season tyres. Best of the bunch was the Alpina on Michelin PS2's - the steering feedback wasnt far away from that of the hot hatches I had during the 90's. :D

Any feedback as to longevity of tyres on the X6 (if driven with a modicum of restraint)? 15k-20k miles?

Spec wise - I've gone for

Is it a guy called Patrick (or the polish variant of the name) thats got a software and hardware fix - Ive seen his name mentioned on a few US based BMW enthusiast forums?
