Post by philip600 » Wed May 11, 2011 8:59 pm

Hi,
I need to refurb my wheels ( 20" 168's ) & wondered if anyone knows what colour they are & where to obtain the paint in aerosol ?
Many thanks in advance,
Phil.

According to the Alloy Wheels site, the colour is called 'BMW Silver'. Try looking for Wurth German Alloy Wheel paint and Lacquer. Costs about £12.50 a can.

Some BMW Dealers will now refurb them all, or just one for you and the cost is not too bad from what I remember. Might be worth considering getting either them or a local specialist to do it? We're looking at getting HRH's E46 ones done as they are suffering from 'kerb rash'!!

Hi,
Thanks for the info.
I have looked into a professional referb but one wanted the loose wheels taking in & leaving for a day which would cost to have tyres removed, refitted & balanced & the other wanted the car overnight which is a real pain.
I scuffed the front wheel around the full circumferance just after we got the car & carried out a ''temporary'' repair myself with filler & some silver paint & lacquer I had in the garage & to be honest I was quite pleased with the result. It only took me about an hour or so & you can't really tell apart from the silver is a couple shades too light.
That was 18 months ago & the repair has held up well so I thought I'd have another go & take a bit more time & use the correct paint.
There's only the one wheel that has any damage, the rest are ok so I haven't got anything to loose.
Regards, Phil.

Another wurth recommendation.

Results will vary depending on your skill & prep but IMHO you are unlikely to replicate the smooth durable factory finish if completely spraying an entire wheel.

As with other spraying too close/heavilyb applied & your risk blotches & or running, too far & you can get a flat less glossy look.

It's useful for the odd rim scuff but I have had mixed results on a scratched spoke albeit I confess to not using tack cloth or primer. Looks ok but I can see/fell it has been done if I look close &/or touch the surface.

I would suggest getting some tack cloth as this paint seems far fussier re dust & prep residue than other paints when spraying larger sections.

Paint

Lacquer

The same site also have primer listed further down the wurth page.........Not cheap & haven't used it as I didnt want primer overspray on adjoining unpainted sections I was blowing into.

Oh & btw Wicked wheels come to your home or work and spray in back of a paint boothed van. Not seen results myself and they wont strip/dip & powder bake like say Lepsons. The franchise neaer me used to offer a service where they would jack car leave itr on stands ansd send them to Lepsons but turnaround is a few days.

Spit & polish are only outfit I know where you can arrive early and collect late in day all done.......they were based in Tunbridge Wells ; again I have read mixed reviews.

I think somebody did mine before I owned it. The paint seems soft as it was scraped a bit when tyres were fitted.

No idea if it was a mobile outfit but you can see where the paint has gone over old balancing weight debris/sticky pad marks inide the wheel :(

are mobile painted solutions hard one wonders
