1st Service - Is usually like this?

Post by NewX5 » Fri May 06, 2011 7:50 pm

X Finally had 1st service 10600 miles since November 2010 did not realize I drove so much, all they done was oil service and some filters. I also got a quote for updating sat nav which is recommended twice per annum ( I have never know this with any vehicle i have owned ) initial cost £388 then after I stopped laughing they reduced down to £288. Apparently they update the whole car this is all they could tell me as they have not updated any new cars yet (dealer Stephen James about 3 Branches Bromley Kent area) has anyone had this done?

I hope the cost goes down as I really need the sat nav (Depend on it) so generally update what ever vehicle I have, I am enjoying this car but things like this really cheese me off spoils the fun of having a car. I also need new tires in about 2000 miles just got quote from Quick Fit including digital tracking on the hunter system £1650 (bridgestone) £1750 (Dunlop) does anyone have any preference between the 2 tires as i have only used Bridgestones in 19 so not able to tell difference.

Overall pleased with service from dealer so will use again.

NewX5,

Forget kwikfit! They're only a gauge for the most expensive option!

Read the description on your tyres and then do an online quote with blackcirlckles.com, camskill.com (could be co.uk)..

The update is nothing but $tealer taking the pi$$. A firmware upgrade is worth nothing more than 15 minutes of their time. They have the file and just have to hit the return botton!

Thanks for that Sanj although I have not had much luck on either site ie Only Bridgestone available but rear one on site has different speed rating from the fronts and only dunlop rear available on site. I am not to sure If I am searching wrong but certainly did not have the sets I require, I think I will just send out a few emails but will most probably go with kwik fit as was just straight forward any ideas or advice appreciated. thanks

I agree about the Nav upgrade. Most of the cost is apparently for the licence key so Navteq must be doing well out of them. My E53 still has a 2008 disc and the E71 has not been changed from new last November. Mind you, I've only done 2500 miles from new so far. I did get an oil filter and oil change done at 1,000 miles though.

Roads don't change that much in the UK (apart from the size and number of potholes) and the only reason I would upgrade would be if the speed limit daa was better or there was something in the vehicle software that was better. Even then I wold not change it twice a year - that is defo taking the wee wee!!

Buy the satnav updates on ebay for about £20 or BitTorrent perhaps....

With regards to KwickFit - they are rip-off merchants too but if you book and pay via the website you'll get internet prices. I got new rears for £223 inc VAT which was just as cheap as all the mobile/Internet firms who didn't have stock available immediately.

Personally I would never use any kind of illegitimate software on my computers or even my cars, as it goes the deal from kwik Fit at the moment does not seem to bad as will include tracking on a hunter system which is usually between £55 - £150 just depends on where you go. Out of all the tire dealers I have spoken with Kwik Fit seem to be the only who can get the stock when you need it. I will go with them as we have used for years on all our cars and have never had any issues, If I can find supplier with items in stock would most probably be able to get slightly more discount but no one seems to have the full set in stock.

I had an alignment done at kwik fit - results were dire & resulted in me having to pay for lengthy KDS procedure at dealer. KDS was overpriced and that was rejected by me on 1st outing. I now use an indy that seem ok with alignment & also have an independent tyre specialist who use the hunter system. I think I paid them £45 to get the Z3 checked/adjusted a month or so ago.

Wearing my admin hat - I must add that for legal reasons I must ask folk not to engage in open forum discussions re sourcing of pirated software - Thanks

Kwik Fit have only 1 Hunter machine in London Kingston branch, I thought the E70 X5 (not sure about other models) should only be aligned using a digital machine. I could be wrong as was told by dealer.

Hunter & KDS one of the same.

To find an alignment expert using Hunter sytem look at the website alignmycar.co.uk it's not just about the kit it's also about the operator.

Re tyre sourcing & fitting costs its the same as any other work for our cars......Often the more cost effective solutions need some legwork &/or online research.

If too busy to be doing with the hassle then easiest options provide convenience, albeit perhaps at a price.
