Set off today for Newcastle on Tyne, nearly got to Leeds when the car started to misfire and the engine light started to flash. Pulled over and phoned the RAC who told me that it would be about 45mins , 15mins later the RAC man arrived, plugged his computer in which showed the fault of multiple misfires. These were cleared and the car then started to check faults, at idle no faults showed but when revved the fault showed as misfire cylinder 4 (drivers side near bulkhead).

He thought that it could be a coil pack as it was only cylinder 4 that showed any faults, he cleared the fault several times and each time only cylinder 4 came up with the fault.

So there is no warning that a coil pack is about to give up the ghost

He bought a coil pack from Euro car parts £55 + vat, fitted it in about 10mins, started the car up and everything ok .

We are now in Newcastle and it is really nice, just going out for a drink (no brain haemorrhages, (for those at Bristol meet)).

So a big thanks to the RAC for the help I got today, could not fault the service.

Unfortunately it is a fact of life that despite all the clever systems built into these cars, they can usually only tell you when something has gone wrong rather that something is beginning to go out of tolerance and should therefore be considered for replacement. Of course a lot of the time us drivers may notice te issue before the car systems tell us!

It is possible to guild this kind of capability into our cars but the cost of the sensors, computer monitoring, data processing software, wiring harnesses and then the weight of all these ancillary bits means that in reality it's completely impractical at present. You would probably need the equivalent of a flight engineer just to keep an eye on the now impressive array of dials, guages, lights and displays on the dash.......ever seen a piccie of a small bizjet flight deck?
