Just a quick hello - new chap doing some research
Hi,
I thought I'd just say hello and thank you all for putting such a useful resource of info up for people like me to search and digest when researching an "X".
I'm an ex-Supra TT owner who is currently squeezing into a couple of Ford Pumas (one at a time) for thrills and mundane mileage - the time has come to sort this sorry situation out and at the present time I'm considering an X5, probably a V8 but I'm open to being swayed in any direction based on what I read here.
I'm active on lots of other forums and tend to go through phases about what car I fancy but the X5 keeps coming back up the list as something that ticks most of the boxes I have, namely luxurious, 4WD, loaded with toys, comfortable over a distance, fun when times allow and relatively subtle amongst other traffic.
I figured the V8 itch might as well be scratched before petrol gets more expensive than running a car on whisky
Chances are I'll be lurking for a while and trying to wear the search button out in a bid to gather as much information as I can.

Thanks for the welcome, I'm digesting some of it at the moment - great to see all the info on standard equipment and options too, I usually end up having to buy a brochure on eBay for this kind of stuff

Re: Just a quick hello - new chap doing some research
Welcome. I had the big finned TT Supra way back when it first came out. Dreaded DSC made it a pig to get off the line in the wet LOL. ent from that to an Impreza Turbo, then Evo VI (mental) then 330d, 535d and now X6 40d. Different type of driving experience altogether so IMO not worth trying to come up with any sort of reasoned comparison. A V8 X5 will drink just as much as your Supra did; then again you can actually get real live people in the back, not circus midgets, and still have room for a set of golf clubs and a trolley (4 actually) LOLOL!
I got the diesel bug and have never before had 3 straight cars from same manufacturer (I change cars every 3 years as a rule).
Do not rule out a diesel until you've tried one. A 40d will give you a big grin on your face, especially when you look at the fuel gauge after you've just swept up a couple of hundred miles of A road. Mid range is ridiculous, and my X6 40d embarasses cars half its size/weight.

+1 for the 40d Even though mine isn't even run in yet, it's a rocket and drives beautifully, a sign if even better things to come. The 8sp transmission is a smooooooooth piece of hardware too. Who needs 8-cyl and Petrol when you can have 6-cyl, Diesel and a pair of turbos to help you talk the torque
Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

+1 for the 40d. Mine's also not yet run in, but given it a few (not all the) beans from time to time, and always brings a big grin to my face! Quite surreal and counterintuitive surging so strongly whilst being so big and heavy! Very quick straight off the line, with no lag whatsoever. Love it!
