Tyre Pressure on 19"

Post by bmw_fan » Sat Mar 26, 2011 1:51 pm

Hello everyone,
I checked my tyre pressure this morning and found 3-3.1 bar. The tyres are new and have been fitted by my local bmw dealer 5 weeks ago (summer tyres). According to the sticker it's supposed to be 2.2 (for 255 front and 285 rear) so I deflated the tyres and adjusted the pressure but now I found the ride sooooo heavy ! Am I doing something wrong here ?
Thanks

A drop of 14psi (1 bar approx) will do that, but you will have improved grip and wear however I am surprised that the dealer pressures were all that far out though. Is your pressure guage OK? There's always the possibility that their guage was right and yours is approx 1 bar out - which would then have an effect on your steering weight. Might be worth double checking.

Thank you for that. It did cross my mind. I use a Michelin digital gauge..and never had an issue with my other car (e46). Maybe it's not accurate (after all these years...) Any recommendation for an accurate pressure gauge?

tescos garage, they must surely have some form of calibration capture on their inflators.....i bought a cheap little pump off ebay last month, thought i would check my pressures of new wheels/tyres just fitted and it was showing 60 psi!!! lol so bout 4 bar ish (14.6 psi to a bar yes) well anyhow down to tescos and they were all equal sat at 38psi

I used to run 32 PSI all round but found on the front tyres I was getting significantly more wear on the outside edges than the middle of the tyre and on the rears I was wearing on the inside edge. I've had all new tyres a week or so ago and full alignment/camber adjustment to within spec. I've had the fronts on 2.2bar and rears on 2.7bar as I was towing last week. It's only ever me in the car so I should drop the rears back down to 2.2bar but I might leave them for a while and keep an eye on the wear pattern.

Interestingly the dealers/bodyshop changed three of my tyres and I had the forth changed at kwickfit. When I went to check the pressures they were all over the place. The guy in kwickfit said I should keep the rears at around 38PSI which is 2.7 bar (ish).

That said I've had a tyre changed in kwickfit before and found they didn't tighten up the wheel bolts so I'm not going to rely on what they say too much. :?
