I have been told by a lot of people that there is a oil filter on the auto gearbox and it is ment to lengthen the life of the gearbox can anyone tell me where this filter is and if some one has done a diy write up please post a link. X5 E53 2003 3.0D

There is a filter and it takes up most of inside of the bottom transmission pan. If you can find a write up on a fluid change then the info should be in it. Unless there's a real reason to change it due to some other factors, it's normally only done as part of a fluid change. There are many debates on whether changing the fluid is actually beneficial so I won't start another one :D
