paddleshift options on the e53??

Post by 4.8isFred » Wed Apr 13, 2011 4:01 pm

Just wonered has any x5 owners had an after market paddleshift kit fitted to there x5. I imagine the steering wheel would need to be replaced with one that has the paddle controls. If so, how does the system work.Must be better than using the steptronic stick????

I would be interested to know if owners have done the mod to hear there thoughts on the system.

Thanks.

Hi mate
I have carried this out on my car very easy job you will need an e46 m3 smg steering wheel which comes with the paddle shift set up built in and the airbag slip ring assembly that is fixed to the steering column behind the wheel, this unit is different to your current one as it has the extra pins and internals to transmit the signals from the selector paddle switches on the steering wheel to the gearbox control unit.
After fitting the steering wheel and slip ring all you have to do is run two wires from the back of the slip ring and connect into the block connector for the steptronic selector at the gearshift , quite an easy job.
If you need advice or the wire coluors you have to splice into pm me.
Cheers

yes I have done the mod, about 4 years ago, to be honest I have forgotten the wiring diag, but go with stevox5 and see how you get on.
Although it is fitted and works well, I am a lazy so andso and rarely use it.

Or if it is totally going over your head you can pay a premium and have mstyle supply and fit the kit...

i went down down the lazy route, got a second hand steering wheel off ebay, and got birds bmw to fit for me supplied mu own slip ring. didnt have the time to take it appart and worried i balls something up. i had all the seperate parts for the harness, and even a harness made up with full instructions to fit. theres a guy from germany that was selling harness and slipring and instructions for about 130 which wasnt bad considering im sure the slip ring is about over 50 im sure.
