My X5 is here ... almost !!

Post by MJim » Mon Apr 11, 2011 11:28 pm

My car is finally at the dealer !! Hopefully just in time for more of that fabulous weather we've been getting !! I would like to say a huge thank you to all of you on this forum for all the help in speccing the car. As many will know, the car I've gone for is an X5 40d M sport, deep sea blue with oyster and dark bamboo trim. I opted for the 19in wheels and sports suspension delete (as commented on elsewhere), and added quite a few toys ...

I feel I've never introduced myself as a newbie, as it seemed a bit premature without an X5 parked outside...

My car background kicked off with a 205GTI 1.9 in miami blue, and no PAS. A legendary car which to be honest I wish I'd never sold. Next I moved on to a TVR Chimera 500 - a stunning car (imho) and breathtakingly quick in a straight line (sledgehammer in the back anyone??). I also loved the way you would feel the deep rumble of a TVR coming before you saw it. Sadly however, it was a right duffer in the reliability department, even by TVR's standards ! I think it broke down 7 times in 18 months so it had to go - usually a flat bed job with another major fault. Next came a Golf V5 which I ended up keeping ever since as it has been such a brilliant little car - quick, comfortable and very reliable. In terms of serious performance cars, I was fortunate to go on a couple of Jonathan Palmer track days - highly recommended if you ever get the chance, as you get to race various track cars round a circuit in a safe environment - and get shouted at to go faster all the time rather than told to slow down as I was expecting! Sadly I discovered that my race talent is mid table, rather than at the top where we all seem to think it is !!

The move to the (much!) bigger X5 has been prompted by all the clobber that goes with our two young children, with the pause in making the move due to the recent economic troubles, and also due to delays in finding the right car. I was ready to pull the trigger on a Q5 a while back, but was shocked with my test drive. Wasn't sure if it was the turbos or the transmission - but enough lag to insulate a drafty mansion in Lapland!

Back to the X5, I'm looking to get the vulnerable parts 3M'd by Armourfend later this week all being well, prior to collecting the car hopefully on Friday. I'll let you know how both go, and look forward to keeping in regular touch on this forum ...

Nice car history.
Been lucky enough to go on the JP days 3 times now with corporate (too expensive to do out own pocket!). Amazing and easily rate as some of the most adrenalin pumping and thrilling days ever experienced. Spot on about it confirming your place (or lack of!) in the World league of speed!

Anyway, new X sounds fabulous. Look forward to the pics and good luck.

PS: Used to love the 205's in that Laser Green and Miami Blue special edition paint! (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... hinten.jpg)

MJim...........belated welcome ;)

Always good to read a car history. 205GTI 1.9 one of a number of vehicles I once seriously considered owning. I drove one & whilst fun I imagine some would have become frustrated with owning a car that seems to keep saying "come on then - let's play" to the driver. Fun on near empty B Road's but perhaps not so much fun in stop/start urban traffic, ( then again 105 & 115 HP 1.6 offerings were available too). Tidy examples of 1.9 held firm money for considerable time iirc.

JP days are like many cars I admire ......on long term wish list
Gone - 2002 E53 X5 4.4i Sport (Pre Facelift) Owned 2006-2016.

@brewer - makes me quite nostalgic seeing that miami blue 2051.9! Thanks for posting it up. Maybe time to start listening to my old Oasis CDs ... oh on second thoughts perhaps not !!

@AW8 - many thanks for the official welcome, and many thanks also for the brilliant site! The 205 was actually a blast - it was the TVR that used to wind me up - you'd catch up with the next car along the road so quickly and it would eventually start to get increasingly annoying trying to get past the next one - you know how the traffic appears to conspire against you at times - steady stream of oncoming traffic in the straights then clear road through the corners!! JP days are awesome and really worth it, although have to confess I was also fortunate to go on corporate events there both times so easy to say that ...
