Handbrake Ratchet Replacement

Post by ejc » Sat Apr 09, 2011 8:51 am

Hi all

I have been told I need a new ratchet as it appears to be worn. I have been told that it doesn't click in and springs back. Trouble is I am so used to may car that I am not sure how else it should feel and I don't get a spring back!

I am trying to do some research on how to get hold of this part and how easy it is to replace. I can find loads of info on cables and gunked up pads but nothing about the ratchet mechanism.

Can you help?

EJC

Have a look at Realoem (http://www.realoem.com)' put you car type, year, engine etc, or just use the last 7 characters of your VIN into the tool and you should be able to trawl through to find the right parts for your chassis number. At least it is a starting point..

It should be in the Brakes section. I'm not sure you'll be able to just buy the ratchet on its own. You may need the lever assembly. It will give you a part number for the part so you can investigate with a supplier.

Very interested in this topic as my handbrake mechanism is faulty too, I was told that the front seats needed removed and there is quite a bit of work involved in fixing this, is there any truth to this?

Thanks

Could be. The lever is mounted under the centre console and getting at the bolts and fixings for that may well mean moving the seats out of the way which could unfortunately mean dismounting them. :(

I don't think dismounting the seats is difficult, just blooming heavy! No doubt someone will be along with a 'how to' do it.

Had to have this replaced for last MOT - My mechanic tried to tighten up the 'slipping ratchet' went he whole thing went.
Got a new part form the dealers for about 80 quid - which I thought was very good as its a big enough piece, the ratchet, the handle, the gaitor etc. According to my mechanic - was a 'bas$^rd' to fit. Seats do not need moving but the centre consol arm rest needs loosening off to allow access.
If i recall it took him a couple of hours to do. When the old unit came out, it was clear to see why it was slipping, the dogs where completely worn in one quadrant.
