When fitting a k&n filter to my bmw x5 e53 30d manual do i have to put the top cover back on as it is a twat to get back on with cover, so can i leave cover of please???????

I wouldn't advise it !! Hot air will be drawn in from the engine bay rather than the cooler 'outside' through the ducting.
Not sure if the intake air duct has sensors in it as well.
There is a post in the ''how to'' section with regards to fitting a new air filter & whilst it is a pain it's not too bad when you do it the correct way.
Make sure the 'lug' section at the end of the filter is in correctly as you can fit it upside down but it won't seat properly.
