haw many punctures have you had (RFT tyres)

Post by acideraser » Wed Apr 06, 2011 10:30 am

Hi Guys,
I am considering again tyre insurance :? but had no experience with RFT before. I would appreciate if you could let me know how many punctures have you had (RFT tyres) and in what period.

Thanks for your input
cheers

I've had two one of which I had only replaced the tyre two days previously to a new Diamaris and it was a nail. Sweet smile and it was FOC at the fitters for puncture repair. The other was two days before the meet in March and that was a nail and cost £20.

Thanks for the info. It seems I'd better put this money away than spend now for tyre insurance. You managed to repair - I thought RFT cannot be repaired or at least manufacturers do not allow repairs for safety reasons?

Not had any yet on the X5 or X6. I have considered putting 'Puncturesafe' into the wheels (look it up on the web). It's good stuff and fills punctures safely. Been around for years and does not leave a nasty residue as it's water based. I may install it later in the year as I'm not happy about not having a spare and not being able to fibd an RFT eadily when needed - especially for the Winter set. Motorcyclists swear by it and it's very easy to use. Just deflate the tyre (jack the car up to take the load), take out the valve, fill the tyre with the gloop, put the valve back in and re-inflate. I had it my bike tyres and it saved my life. You need 19 Units per tyre for the X5 with standard 19" or 20" rims. I do have tyre insurance to cover major holes that might occur though.

They can be repaired like any other tyre as long as they have not been run flat/empty for too far.

You may struggle to find somebody to do it though

No punctures yet in the touring, covered 8k in just under a year. 1 in the OH's 1er, almost had this 3 years now. This was repaired at ATS (Bridgestone Potenza) Called a few places and to be fair most did not want to touch it. ATS had no issue as Bridgestone allow repairs, but they do get you to sign that you have not covered more than 50 miles and no exceeded 50 mph. Have had no issues since repair. I do have tyre insurance on the Touring 3 years upto 5 tyres, cost £200. Have to say I wouldn't pay any more that this. On the flip side only need one pucture and its money back as from what I understand my current tyres can't be repaired.

I had two in 45,000 miles. Both tyres were toast.

thanks again guys, the quote I have for tyre insurance is £269 for 3 years and 5 tyres, up to £250 per tyre, it will pay off if more then one puncture. What worries me - one has to get approval for replacement in advance so I wonder how long this will take...
Also small print says that even rft tyre will be replaced if cannot be repaired - so what happens if it can be repaired but I can't find anyone to do it...

Have a look at RSR Tyres, I'm sure I saw a leaflet in there promoting insurance for 12 months per tyre at around £20.00. Not sure if they are near you as you do have to go back to them to claim,

Does that mean you could insure just two tyres?
