Electric mirrors, seem temperamental, as does tyre monitor

Post by 4.8isFred » Tue Apr 05, 2011 5:39 pm

Hi all, having taken ownership of 4.8 model i noticed the electric mirrors very wierd. Pressing the auto fold button the mirrors folded than open again, then the N/S mirror opened and closed then the drivers mirror did the same, both mirrors stationed in the open position? is this the norm? do i need the press the button twice to activate a staioned position? or does the button to fold need to be shifted to the drivers side. Would appreciate some advice on this thanks.

I no from e39 M5 ownership the tyre montoring system plays up alot especially on the m5 not sure if this is the case with the E53?

Driving the car home yesturday noticed the tyre warning light came alite on the cluster but after checking all round couldn't find a fault.
Any advice again much appreciated.

Thanks,

fred.

Sanj has created a how-to for the mirror fix, which you can find here:

Hi,
Note sure how the e39 system works but on the e53 the system monitors to rolling radius of the tyres rather then the actual pressure & should be reset each time you check / inflate the tyres.
If this was not done l;ast time they were pumped up the light may come on even if the pressures are correct.

Can't remember the exact sequence but from memory you inflate the tyres to the correct cold pressures ( should be on a sticker on the drivers door )
then turn ignition to position1, press & hold the button on the dash until amber light comes on, start the car & drive off. The light should go out within a few hundred yards & system now set.
It now knows how fast each wheel is turning with the correct pressure, a drop in pressure in any tyre will mean the wheel turns faster as it's rolling radius gets smaller &the system light should come on & warn you.

Hope this makes sense ?

Tyre warning could be a sensor on it's way out ( on the inside of the valve on each tyre). The batteries in them only have a limited life and need changing after about 8 years +. May even be the spare causing the problem. I got sick of the fault appearing on my dash so I got the tyre pressure system programmed out so I no longer get the message. I just keep an eye on the tyre pressures my self :)

My sensor has come on twice since having the car for a little over a month for no reason. Strangely on the same road in the same place lol. Just reset it.

Not an expert on this, but I seem to remember from previous posts that the tyre pressure monitoring is different between 4.6 and 4.8. On my 4.8, there are definitely no valve-based sensors and my understanding is that the system operates via the ABS sensor by detecting differential braking (ie changes when one tyre deflates).
I've found it pretty good in that it has detected a couple of punctures (both nails) which I've been able to get repaired immediately. However I have had a couple of false alarms where a quick stop and visual inspection have confirmed nothing obviously wrong followed by pressure check when able (I keep one of those cigarette socket inflators/gauge in boot). Always best to check all pressures and then reset via the centre console switch as it differential based.

Hi,

Fred's car is a facelift model & I don't think any of them had sensors in the actual wheel.
As Gobiman has said later systems use the ABS sensors to comparethe speed of each wheel, as tyre deflates it gets smaller & will then go faster so abs sensor picks this up & displays a warning.

Agreed thay are also known as pulse generators when using real oem for the part number ;)
I actually find mine pretty useless to be honest
