Just had a couple of weeks in France and this time we tried a fly/drive rather than drove ourselves.
The car we rented (via Sixt who looked after us really well after our flight was delayed and the car requested ( X1 U11)was no longer available) ended up being a 2.0i petrol X2 automatic FWD only. We think it was an M Sport trim too.
For moving three people with hard luggage the 100 miles or so from airport to Gǐte it was just the right size.
My wife now has an iX1 (electric) so everything was the same, apart from the steering wheel being the wrong side and both of us trying to change the gears with the window switches (spoiler, it doesn’t work!), we found the petrol car a very pleasant drive. Economy was excellent (somewhere over 35mpg), with 48V mild hybrid tech. Really quiet on the road, almost as quiet as an electric until ‘pressed’ when the engine growl became apparent.
One nite of caution for anyone hiring. Don’t pay for satnav! BMWs have it built in anyway, along with CarPlay and Android Auto. I took our Garmin nav just in case we found a BMW without that functionality and found that we (of course) didn’t need it. The satnav system worked better than the one in the X6 (well that’s 16 years old now) and the i4 which has idrive 8. The X2 has idrive 9 (no wheel controller any more) with everything being in the touch screen.
Loads of space, very comfortable and we enjoyed it.
Warning - petrol in France is much more expensive than the UK. Over €2/litre now.

The iX3 I have on order has the new display system that runs along the bottom of the windscreen. No instrument binnacle at all. It feels a bit odd, but the driver does not have to look down at all. That being said, there are no buttons with everything being either voice or touch activated - which requires eyes down AND a hand off!
