Bought the car in June 2012 with only 48,000 and been more than happy...probably becuase its not driven much... anyway issue started this morning. This car has folding mirrors which work off the fob and from switch in the car. the drivers side mirror has no life i.e the mirror wont fold in or out either from fob or switch in the car. sometimes if you adjust the mirror tilt switch... the actual mirror moves but it will carry on and only stop on its own accord. The passenger mirror works spot on; folding, tilting etc. I prised off the casing fror the defective mirror and can see its quite well sealed but everything seems fine; no corrosion or the ribbon kinked or anything. when i flick the switch to fold or unfold the mirrors I cant here any noise whatsoever from this defective unit.... when the mirror is manually pulled out and put in right place.. it seems 'slack' i.e I thought it would 'click ' into the respective position. Would all this be a meaning to expect the worse case scenario? i.e whole new unit? I have emailed guy on ebay as he has one but its for LHD car but just incase he gets one for RHD unit. I have trailed through google but all relates to these microswitches etc but these relate to X% mirror issues and not of same type internally.
Its not major but I like to keep all my cars in tip top condition and would like to get this sorted and the cost issue will have some bearing on time scale. Anyway many thanks guys

my first problem on x83 (2004)-- folding mirror (drivers side)
This is an old post at least from 2012.
I'm from 2025 and have owned this model for 7yrs. Currently 225k on the clock. Car still serving its mission responsibly. I'm happy with it. its the 2.5 engine.
Anyways the mirrors will act up...on occasion!
I don't have the electrical folding, but mechanical.
I've found when the car battery is low... dipping is a problem.
I found when there's moisture outside.... Dipping is a problem.
I've found when I manually fold in the mirrors... Dipping can occur to be the problem. Although I've checked...never has the fuse been the problem (I wish it were)
Remedy?
I've traded out mirrors and motors and switches.
This came address the problem for years. But it can arise again.
Best just to never bother the thing and it functions superbly.
I've also experienced where the thing is inoperable and in a few days it kicks back on!
Please note: The BMW G5 electrical unit operates the outside winged mirrors.
