BMW Wifi Spot

Post by NewX5 » Tue Mar 29, 2011 1:37 pm

Just had this email.

Ok the Wi-Fi cradle is £439.21 inc Vat you do need to have a data sim to put in this too, BMW do have them in stock so If you wanted one I could try and email them to let us have one,

The ipad holders we still have no idea how much or when it will be sorry,

I am not too sure about this sim though does that mean I would need sim with data package or just calls?

I'll be using my iPhone as a hotspot for car based browsing, not sure if I'd get the iPad holder, it's for in the back isn't it?

The holder is for the rear but not sure what BMW will charge for that so may look at next-base option if available, I would be interested to know what it is like using an iPhone for a hotspot not sure If you have used. I will say the BMW option is largely over priced but I plan to put ipads in rear and will need some internet option or that goes out the window.

Another option is a Mi-Fi dongle, just keep it in the car and set the iPad's up through that, they wouldn't just be tied to the car then either.
I've not tried the iPhone as a hotspot yet, but the mi-fi looks good.

Thats an excellent item will have to go in a three store and test, hopefully there will be no issues whilst driving with the way this works. Thanks

Just been on the phone to three this morning discussing the mifi and use in a vehicle which they confirmed works really well so will get down to three shop today to test. I may need to just purchase and use to really see how good it works I think they have a 14 day return period, the really good thing is you can pay another £15.00 to get item unlocked to use on any network so for me will be good for France.

Thanks Jalf

This thread has caught my interest, but was wondering if you knew if the dongle (pay as you go) has a time limit on data usage, and if the top up expires?

I use the 3G Mi-Fi dongle for work on customer sites when they cannot supply internet access, works great, even when connecting to servers outside the UK. I have it on pay-as-you-go an dthe data usage has a 30 day expiry. £10 get you 1GB which usually last sthe month with ocassional use.

Thank you for that Avtar, thought that might be the case. Think we only use about 2 Gb a month at home so 1 Gb would prob do

I can confirm the 3 mi-fi dongle works really well... and you can unlock it dead easy too, so you can put in any SIM you like :)

If you have sn iphone 4 and an ipad, can you not set up a tethering system which allows an ipad to connect to an iphone running IOS version 4.3.x or lster? I though that was the whole idea of tethering? I have not set mine up, but Orange told me it was possible for £5 a month and I use my 500MB allowance via the phone.

I can't check it at the moment as I'm currently lying alongside a swimming pool in Southern Thailand. The weather's rubbish (never known it to be like this), but who cares... :D 8-)

and this is not an April Fool! It's 10:34 am here and about 4:30 something in the UK :tumbleweed:
:ant: Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.
