2005 3.0d manual front lock

Post by Martinc01 » Mon Feb 03, 2025 10:18 pm

Hi all
Strange problem arose last night as I turned a corner car shuddered front wheels locked and car cut out. Re started and had noticeable vibrations through car….turned steering lock to lock and it went away. Drove home but as soon as I turned almost on full lock vibration came back and front wheels locked.4x4 light only came on. So things I’ve checked are engine mounts no movement. Unplugged abs still same unplugged transfer actuator, still same.jacked front up spun one wheel other spins other way no noise. All front suspension 9 month old as are tyres and transfer fluid changed.no fault codes apart from steering sensor not connecting although can be reset? Any ideas please? 2005 manual diesel
Thanks

Does sound like the diff.
Tires having odd tread depth are the normal culprit for that.

It's the tread depth between front and rear that can wind the diff up.
Any more than 2mm difference will do it and you never know what the last owner did regarding fitting new.

Front tyres maybe fine however if the fronts are newer than the rears they could well have a different rolling radius. Try parking on flat level ground make a chalk mark at the bottom of the rear tyre same for the front. Roll the car forward 2 or 3 revolutions both chalk marks should be at the bottom if one is visibly not lining up tyres are your problem which is causint trans mission wind up and can certainly damage Diffs and Transfer case

Running the car back and forwards willbring you back to where you started? just run the car forwards 10 ft. Then check

4x4 light comes on after the battery has been disconnected and goes out when you turn lock to lock although it sounds like possibly you have a transfer case problem which only shows up on full lock where it s working the most , these had an actuator gear which was prone to stripping from what I remember but chain stretch is also very likely at this age.
