Measure your rod for me?

Post by ScouseMouse » Fri Jan 24, 2025 9:51 am

Hey, it was suggested I re-post this from Bimmer Forums as not having any luck, hopefully someone here can help.

After a couple of different mechanics have mentioned what a pain it was to remove the full size spare wheel to access my battery in the last few months, I've recently begun to realise how many parts were missing from the boot of my 2005 X5, including all those in the highlighted part of the attached image.

I've managed to get hold of the actual spare wheel lift, but the wheel itself is held down with a bit of wood and a wing nut. The rod holding it sticks out of the loading floor support, which means it's always at risk of scratching the wheel whenever it's pulled out.

To this end, I'm trying to source the proper item at a reasonable cost and think I've found a suitable supplier, but I need to confirm the lengths of the rods.

So if anyone has intimate knowledge of their rod and could provide me with the length, that would be great, if not, could someone measure their rod for me? Also, can anyone confirm if I should have both rods, or area they different lengths for the space saver and full size wheel?

Also, are parts 6 and 7 in the image below just for those with spave saving wheels? I'm not sure where they should go.

My understanding is that the spare wheel has 2 straps underneath it and a sort of handle which you pull and this lifts the wheel up to make it easier to remove. Can’t help beyond that as I have an 85ltr gas tank in there. Now that does make it difficult to get to the battery. My policy is to remove my hearing aids so I can’t hear them whining about the weight.
I assume you have a full sized spare wheel.

From memory regular E53s had a full size 17" spare wheel with the rather messy lifting cradle. The 4.6 & 4.8 had a 19"×5" Alloy space saver. I dont recall the clamping down device though i suppose my car must have had it ? I would have thought a main dealer would be your best source to get what you seek or google LLL Parts who are an Internet based supplier of BMW/VW parts. I've found them very useful

I would guess that items 6&7 are indeed support pads for the 19" thinner space saver wheels.

Item 9 is a boot floor support iirc, but i dont remember if it was somehow used in conjunction with the cup and wing-nut arrangement.
