The other day I drove from Cambridge to Coventry- virtually A14 and M6 all the way. The journey cost me circa £45 and the trip computer showed an average of 24.7 mpg.
Does that sound about right as I could have sworn it was better than that when I’ve been before.. that’s doing no more than 70mph. Most was going around 60.
It averages 19mpg usually according to the car.
Had to edit as I forgot to mention the fact it’s a 2001 4.4i…

As best i can recall now,, i would have been quite pleased with that. On my 4.4 a figure of 15mpg was constantly displayed on 'local' commuting.

Not too shabby my e70 twin turbo diesel only shows 29 mpg average at best , 34.4 best on a single run usually which is the official figure

Colder weather car's burn a tad more as well.

If I was getting that mpg from my 4.6 I’d be out dancing in the street. At the moment I’m showing 15.2 mostly really local. Never seen more than 20 on a 400 mile run. I’m having dark thoughts of selling atm.

Like Henry's, the 4.6 gives around 15 local and 20 on a run to keep the miles off the 4.6 (as they are getting rarer) I brought an E70 3.0sd gives 25 local and on a couple of trips up to Yorkshire 40+
But then I never brought the 4.6 for it's economy, still love driving it nothing quite like the sound of a V8 and it's punch. The E70 is a very different drive

I echo those sentiments. The V8 growl and burble are a nice soundtrack. I've said before, I'd like another one while the possibility still exists. Nice E70 V8s are thin on the ground, though and the E53 does look dated now, so not much choice.

The problem with my 4.6 from a sale point of view is the almost 177k which scares people away. However it has never run better and everything works. However if anything goes wrong I’m now familiar enough with it to repair. ie put a new set of gears in the mirror last week £7 greased up and probably good for years. I’ll probably regret saying this later today. Ha Ha.

The mirror gears were a total pita for me. I replaced the innards twice, and in a moment of madness had the dealer replace both, just the mechanisms, no shroud or glass, it was over £1k. It was the last bill, in my ownership i think.

I have a shed full of spare parts like door handles and carries, complete mirrors/headlights with angle eyes/tail lights/. I tell people off for pulling the handles instead of lifting them, I get compliments for opening the door for the wife but really it’s to stop her scratching the paint on the door with her wedding ring. I do have one little problem that pops up now and again which I don’t know how to fix but I can get round it in that the heating will only blow hot to one side. Selecting manual and changing down and running at 3000 rpm for 20 seconds blows the air lock from wherever it is cures the problem. No coolant leaks and level is always good. Heater valves are always in the correct position.

Went from Cambridge to Coventry again. This time I did 60mph in cruise virtually all the way and I pumped the tyres up a bit more. Result was 27.1mpg. I even took a photo of the screen but it won't upload for some reason

Mpg wise that sounds pretty good. I get 27.1 from my 40d around town and 35-37 on a steady motorway run. Abit less when the roof box is fitted.
For those with the financial resources, a lot of the larger BMWs now only come with petrol V8s. Diesels have pretty much vanished. I think there are now only 6 BMWs that have a diesel option. All the hybrids are petrol/electric (mostly 2.0L) however the X5, X6, X7 models are V8 powered…..as are the M cars.

Any wonder car sales are tanking with no diesel options the mainstay of x5s till very recently
I can o ly imagine what the resale value of a v8 would be secondhand in the uk if buyers could even be found

I'm a potential V8 buyer. Finding a good one is the trick

Add in the new road tax for anything producing 255g/km of CO2 at £5,500 for the first year and new diesels will get even rarer. It’s a real shame.
