Glow plug issue
Hello and good morning everyone !
I’ve probs mentioned this issue in previous posts but wanted to keep it separate, as other issues have all been sorted
Anyway I replaced my glow plug relay with a new hitachi relay
And all new Bosch glow plugs, checked all connectors and connections and all seemed well cleared codes ( never looked at the codes since summer ) anyway comes out this morning says pre heat.. gave it a moment and I was like Uhohhhh!!!
Basically turned over and over I got it started but lovely blue smoke.
Any suggestions ? Trying a different brand relay ?
Glow plugs etc ?
Or am I needing to go oldschool make up my own loom with a switch and turn it on like I had Jerry rigged on my jcb on the farm hahaha !!
If anyone puts any input on this much appreciated
Kind regards
Andrew

When you changed the controller, who’s is it? Bosch glow plugs don’t play nicely with certain other brands such as BERU and possibly Hitachi.
BMW specifically state not to use Bosch with BERU in the last Realoem update for later N57 engines. No reference for M57 engines having the same issue. Genuine BMW Glow Relays are eye wateringly expensive though! I believe the OEM is from BERU.
Is the wiring all intact between the relay and each plug?

Yeah replaced it with a hitachi relay, with new Bosch glow plugs after changing, cleared codes, soon as it started getting cold. The codes returned, saying all glow plugs at fault again, all wiring seems fine. Is there anyway I could test ? Thinking of using a multi meter when I have it apart again just Incase the loom that supply’s to the plugs is at fault or maybe it’s the relay not playing ball with Bosch plugs, anyone recommend any others ? it doesn't sound like a heater plug issue more a supply to them issue , have you checked the fuse to the controller as that's the most likely to be the issue now id have thought ?

Not sure where it would be if I’m honest , I thought when I changed it over and cleared the codes it would have been the end of it.. but returned.

Still would love to know any configurations anyone’s tried. As this is the same error I had with last module and then it returned with vengeance. Worth checking resistance with the cables going to the plugs ?i.e continuity test. If there’s a break in the circuit would it give me this error. And if anyone knows which fuses I need to check I’ll have a look, and if there’s any relays that apply to this ( within the fuse boxes ) I can double check these, going to scan the codes tomorrow as I can bet they have returned

Did you check the voltage on the original plugs.
Had the wrong voltage plugs for my 320d but the plugs looked the same.
My e53 has had all failed plugs for the last 6 years and never failed to start it did have 1 good one 7 years ago lol.

Yeah need to find out, considering it’s a new module you’d think it would be good to go, hopefully not broke it with using wrong plugs …
But anyone knows what car places are like (gsf) for one always got parts wrong for mine
