Where to get the absolutely cheapest battery for the e53

Post by cooa99 » Sat Sep 28, 2024 2:18 pm

Ailing battery on my e53 3.0d is finally dead as of this morning despite a short drive yesterday.

My CTEK charger error lamp lights up and no charge going through.

To cut long story short, I have already applied for the ULEZ scrappage scheme so meant to drop the car to recycler in next couple of days.

Cheapest battery I can find so far is a 95Ah 800amps battery from Halfords costs £117

I'm determined not to squander the £2k hush money from tfl so whats the cheapest battery I can put in this hunk of a metal to get it to the scrap yard?

Thanks

Can you not get a jump start to get you going and get there ? hardly worthwhile to buy a battery to scrap it

I’m assuming to jumpstart an X5 I would need a car with similar capacity? Mrs has a Peugeot 3008 which is not likely to have same capacity, would that work?.

It’s late in the day now, I suppose I could give breaker yards a call to see if they have similar specced used batteries for sale

I have just taken the battery out of the car, plugged in the CTek charger to it and I’m not getting any error from the charger. I’ll give them it a couple hours to charge and see what happens

Could be a loose or dirty connection in the car? As in the under-bonnet connections. Not unknown on the E53. There were issues reported several years back of loose or dirty -ve side connections where the battery -ve cable bonds to the body. The socket/spanner on it may just be enough to get you there.

The 3008 will start it fine as it only needs to assist your battery a bit , connect it up and let it idle 5 mins before going for start on x5

As said the 3008 will do the job just connect them up and give it a few minutes to put a bit in the x5 battery.

i plugged the battery back in this afternoon after charging and the final stage unit came right on without keys in the ignition.

So looks like the culprit of the full drain is the cheap hedge hog unit I purchased few months back from ebay. It must have just packed up on friday after a drive.

It’s a shame to let the old girl go but I can’t keep paying the ulez charge

Talking of the ulez charge I am completely suprised to find that my 1999 Alpina b3 with 3.3ltr engine will pass if I get a certificate of Alpina. £70 for certificate but would be a good selling point if I decided to do so.
