When I did mine, I used an old piece of scotch brite with the wonder wheels which really helped in removing stubborn marks.

I’ve heard just normal bottled water especially evian bottled water really works, it’s to do with the mineral content which molecularly works at an atom level liquidising any stains and pitt marks. Go on try a bottle…

quickie... can I apply the cleaner with boards on the car or would you suggest removing the boards as cleaner could damage the paints/plastics etc? any hints?

Just put masking tape along the bottom of the doors to add a bit of protection and if you can, avoid splashing cleaner on the paint. It will depend upon how acidic/alkali the cleaner you use is.

If it's only on for a short time it should not do damage to any waxed paintwork.  I put bilberry cleaner on with a softish brush and that seems fine.
