The 'wheel has arrived today. ........Only thing is that I don't know when I'll get 'round to fitting it & getting it enabled.

You'll need to change the slip ring as well from memory for compatibility?. Or is my knowledge and memory fading?

The slip ring is integral with the column switches. There is no difference in them with/without paddle shift.

I the interest of continuity.........
The job was done 3 weeks ago now.
As well as coding, the mod required a cable to be run from the SZL module to the FRM, and another from the FRM to the FEM. Not really a big job, the whole lot was done in half a day.
Coding the transmission as "Sport Automatic" rather than just plain automatic (necessary for the paddles to work) has changed the automatic shift points slightly, even in comfort mode.
Curiously, the fuel consumption seems to have improved slightly. It could be a fluke, but it's had 2 re-fills now since the mod was done.

Are the points earlier or later? As in, does it now tear through the gears or hang in for a little longer before changing?
At least with this generation you can code changes. Cars arriving with iDrive 8.5 are locked. You can change the code value but the systems ignore them. Seems BMW (and very likely others) don’t want anyone playing any longer.

Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.
Paddle shift
It hangs-on a little longer - not much, but enough to notice. Also, slowing down it drops a little earlier. IMHO hanging-on a little longer isn't a problem as since the remap it has a torque peak at 2.9k rpm rather than the factory map's 2k-4k rpm plateau.
