I changed the engine breather today, just in case of back pressure through the turbo.
Got a long drive tonight, will see if it makes any difference?
One thing to note, after the breather change, I held the revs at around 3000-4000 rpm stood still. Grey smoke started to come from the exhausts.

Sounds like a simple first check at least.
If the smoke starts to get heavier and the oil consumption does not improve then you need to beware of an engine runaway. It’s where the engine burns its own oil and just goes on revving to destruction. Turning the engine off doesn’t stop it and you need to push a damp towel into the air intakes asap to starve the engine of air.

There will be oil in the exhaust and with high revs it will start be heat up and burn off as the temp rises in the dpf ,as X5sport says if the turbo is on the way out runaway though rare will almost certainly be fatal for your engine . I don't know if that breather is prone to blocking but its certainly worth a try .

The cars got 250k on clock, so due a new turbo I suspect.
Oil Level as measured by Bimmerlink went from 62.8mm to 59.47mm, oil loss of 3.33mm over 300 miles today.
I am aware of runaway, hence me monitoring oil loss.
Everything is pointing to a replacement turbo, I've got one lined up when I get home.

Turbo replaced, turned out to be a bugger of a job for the garage.
I ended up taking off and putting on the turbo on a Sunday afternoon whilst it was on a lift and dismantled.
All error codes remain, no smoke from exhaust.

Error Codes after 300 mile drive:
452A Info - Particle Filter System
4501 Exhaust Gas recirculation control
4667 Particale filter system
4222 Gluehkerze cylinder 2, control
3F40 Rail pressure sensor offset test
It did use some oil, but not as much as previous.

452A - warning about remaining DPF life (if it’s had oil going into it, that won’t be good for it).
4501 - EGR Fault - could be sticky and there’s insufficient ‘clean’ air going into the engine.
4667 - DPF Pressure sensor fault, or the DPF is regenerating too frequently (might be connected with the turbo oil issue)
4222 is a glowplug issue - possibly failed.
3F40 - as indicated, could be a bad fuel rail pressure sensor. Often shows as bad idle speed - as in not steady, rises and falls.
4501 - EGR Fault - could be sticky and there’s insufficient ‘clean’ air going into the engine.

Did this resolve your issue? Is your engine an M57 or N57?
My friends car an N57 engine 330d is currently using 1 litre per 500 miles can't see any obvious leaks but those engines are nowhere near as good as the M57

I have the N57 and it doesn’t use oil at all. I’m now changing at 8,000 miles or 12 months regardless. My M57 did use about 1.0L/1,000m for the first 3k or so then stopped.

On the N57 seems to be an issue with spun bearings at higher miles. I think going forward on my F15 I will service 6-8k or like you said 12 months. Mine has had a full rebuild. My M57 35d which is on sale at moment has done 197k it sounds exactly the same as the day I bought it 6 years ago, does not use any oil.

I have only ever used Castrol Edge FST fully synthetic LL04 SAE 5W30. Same in all our BMWs (apart from the leccy one which uses ATF to cool the motors), and I’ve shortened the change interval on the E46 as well as it’s stored for long periods.
I know what you mean about the M57. Our now 18 year old E46 330Cd sounds as good as it did when new. That engine was never put under the ‘pressures’ of the N57 with 204bhp as against 306bhp.

I have recently been using Valvoline and now the indie recommended miller's, I personally wanted to use castrol. I think even the M57 with 286bhp is free of major problems, seen not too long ago one being sold with 340k miles. I think that was an over engineered unit. There's a design flaw in the N57 it is the 3rd cylinder oil feed getting blocked off which then causes issues of oil starvation. This I have seen on a uk engine builder Instagram page, they mentioned they get 1 every week with spun bearings and to be very safe. Service every 6k
