Post by Martinc01 » Tue Jun 20, 2023 9:12 am

Hi all
New to the x5 part of bmw ownership and I bought a e53 with a broken roof……mmm I can manually open them like my 8 series..mistake 1
Mistake 2 oh it’s opening,now it ain’t it’s seized
So I know i should a left it but I didn’t
Now it won’t go down and I cannot get the inside shade
Part to go back to allow access to the roof? My other bmw
You push up and un clip but I don’t know how on this one
So if any one can help as I’ve duct taped it for now
Thankyou

Where are you located? If you're anywhere near Hemel Hempstead, I can thoroughly recommend Executive Autocare. They are a Webasto approved installer/repairer.
I have no connection to them other than they fitted a 'roof in my F25. Their service was first-class.
October 2012 build X3 30d SE, Bluewater.  Now with Webasto sunroof and paddle-shift   8)

This help at all?

viewtopic.php?p=27529&hilit=Panoramic+sunroof#p27529

The E53 is known for panoramic roof faults, usually caused by a broken white metal part. The parts are not available separately and the only option was to disable it or (if BMW were involved directly) replace it as a complete cassette for north of £2k.

There are a few threads in the E53 section that might also help depending upon what’s actually busted. As suggested above, if you can find a local sunroof specialist, they may be able to help.

Thanks for replying
The motor at the back I got to and manually opened the visor which gave access to glass which I managed to close
Now I need to remove the glass and repair in situ but it seems no one has……

The main issue will be getting parts. BMW don’t sell them as they only offer a complete mechanism replacement, hence no threads on disassembly and repair. :?

You can try looking at RealOEM on line. It’s a copy of the BMW Parts database. Use the last 7 characters of your VIN in ‘Serial Number’ and that will find the right car.

Mine was a 2005 and the sunroof sheet is here: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showpa ... Id=54_0262

NOTE: BMW moved their parts system to on-line, dealer only access in December 2019 so there are no up to date lists any longer. You can at least get part data for cars built up to that date and then check with a dealer for price & availability.

There are plenty of repair parts on eBay etc to do the job
Just getting the glass out which a be I would imagine a few bolts. I can then run it manually and see what’s what. Motors are working previous owner took fuse out.
