Waa the disco not serviced on time? Bmw 6 cyls are alot better than JLR. A failure at 22k miles that's really bad
Engine Rebuild
Similar initial service regime as the x5, first oil and filter at around 1500 miles then every year by LR, so full service history with a low yearly of less than 8k a year/service. Apparently it’s a fairly well documented manufacturing fault on the 3.0 tdv6 engines of that era used in the discovery’s, Range rovers and Jags! Hence the move to BMW.
Engine Rebuild
Rebuilding depends on how damaged the engine is, but that's poor from JLR. Im surprised they sell aswell as they do. I think if maintained the 30d N57 is a reliable unit

Thanks &
I think a lot of people buy them on finance for three years and then px them, plus a lot read the articles and think it’s just rare and exaggerated, although to be fair LR have been reasonably good at swapping units out of warranty on a good will basis especially if they had a full LR service history
The x5 has been a great car so far, just wiper blades ad-blue and screen wash, although new summer tyres will be need soon hopefully get another season out of the winters.
Hope your rebuild goes smoothly and you get another good few years of reliable motoring.

Thats what Ive used the last 10yrs, you have to use LL in BM's.....also 'CASTROL' is on top of the oil filler cap
I get mine from Opie oils if you register you'll get discounts from 15 to 20% off, I then checked ebay out to see if its any cheaper...Opie have a good delivery service too....

Marti did you find out at the time what caused spun bearings in the 640d?marti wrote: ↑Sun Jun 11, 2023 9:47 amThats what Ive used the last 10yrs, you have to use LL in BM's.....also 'CASTROL' is on top of the oil filler cap

You see a lot of older xf jags and land-rovers for sale needing an engine soo its fairly common ,the 2.7 and 3.0 v6 's were bad motors that broke the cranks. Me and a mate were going to get xf's before I got the x5 but the amount for sale with blown engines put us right off

I mean BMW have serious issues with their chains, when don't really hear of such faults from the other Germans, what's odd is they never fixed this issue. However the JLR group are not the best engineered cars
Engine Rebuild
The problem with BMW is they only ‘life’ their cars as three years. After that you’re on your own!
Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.
Engine Rebuild
Although they may “only life their cars for three years”, generally they are pretty well made and forums and the knowledgeable members provide valuable information and insights into what needs doing.
One good thing is tha BMW do offer a very good comprehensive (albeit a little expensive) extended warranty that covers a lot including wear and tear and importantly the engine, in the case of LR, the engine I had in the Disco was excluded by the warranty company as it had a known manufacturer fault, and therefore relied on Land Rover goodwill.
I suspect the chain issue like a lot of the BMW engine issues is caused by the extended service intervals, although I could be wrong, time will tell

I know loads of people who had chain either failure or bad rattle before 100k on 320/520d engines ,its basically a consumable , there is rumoured to be a local indi near me does 2 or 3 a day and has it down to a fine art now F1 style changes at a grand a time
Long service intervals imo have a lot to do with it as well as riding 6th gear at near idle to save money causing excess vibration. The same era x5 e70 3.0d I believe uses the exact same chain and rarely had an issue .

Yep....to long a gap between servicing....I'd serviced it every 8 to 10k but previous owners had gone every 16k and above......so they were on their way so to speak before I got hold of it....

These cars seem very sensitive to oil changes, by now bmw should have scrapped long life servicingmarti wrote: ↑Mon Jun 12, 2023 5:16 pmH4MP wrote: ↑Sun Jun 11, 2023 1:51 pmMarti did you find out at the time what caused spun bearings in the 640d?marti wrote: ↑Sun Jun 11, 2023 9:47 am Thats what Ive used the last 10yrs, you have to use LL in BM's.....also 'CASTROL' is on top of the oil filler cap

Bmw have nothing to gain with cars lasting longer it's best if they self destruct just after the warranty is up
