2018 front sensors not working properly

Post by Dennisj2 » Wed Mar 15, 2023 12:43 am

My 2018 X1 the front proximity sensors will not work when approaching an object in the front. Have to stop short of object place vehicle in reverse momentarily then hi back to drive forward and they then start working. Any ideas how to repair?

I think thats normal for BMW? My X6 behaves exactly the same.

Its odd behaviour i agree. I seem to recall querying this when i first got the car, to be told it is normal, albeit odd.

You need to turn the PDC on via the on-dash button and then they work. At least that’s how mine on the X6 work. Pretty sure it was the same on the 2018 2-series we used to have unless Driver Assistance was on. I could choose via the button with the green circle by the hazard light switch. It may depend upon options fitted.

So for forward parking it has to be manually activated? That's even odder, but do i recall now the E53 was the same?

My trusty old Touareg is normal, approach something and the sensors just work, as i would expect them to. BMW system seems illogical to me, though I've got used to ot now.

It may be a setting somewhere in the iDrive. Next time I drive up to a wall I’ll let you know if there’s loud complaints from the car, or a nasty crunch!

Turning the PDC on does indeed turn on the front sensors, but think this is not correct operation.Never had to turn them on like this before a couple of weeks ago! Not sure what is happening?

Mine certainly didn’t come on when sidling up to a wall earlier, until I pressed the PDC button at which point the beeping began.
