E53 20" wheels 315 40 20, tyres too wide...

Post by exfive » Wed Mar 23, 2011 1:25 pm

Hi all wondering if this is viable on a e53, wheels are second hand, front seem very wide.
First is is it doable with regard the protusion at arch, secondly would steering be mega heavy.
If these are off an e70 are the a straight swap, I already have 19" standard on a sport.
Thanks x5driver oldie.

Hello and welcome to the forum - make sure you introduce yourself...

I'm assuming you want to take some E70 alloys/tyres and put them on the front of an E53???

If so, not the best of ideas...

Wider tread at the front, will tramline, will add extra load to the steering pump, stick out beyond your extended arches - MOT failure, never done OEM for those (plus many other) reasons.

Plus the E70 alloys don't fit as a direct replacement (I believe).

E70 has 74.1mm centre bore/hub dimensions and E53 has 72.6mm centre bore/hub so spacers or rings required to drop down to the smaller e53 hub.. numbers from memory so need checking for accuracy.

You sure those wheels are off the front of e70 & not the rear ?
I've got 20" 168's on my e53, rear wheels are 10.5" wide & tyres are 315 35 20, fronts wheels are 9.5" wide with 275 40 20's
Didn't know e70's came with 315's on front but definately would not put them on front of e53.

That's a point - they can't be from the front of an E70???

Thanks guys, these wheels are up for grabs on *bay at the moment.I need 4 tyres replaced and was thinking of getting 2nd hand wheels and part worns for a grand instead of buying 4 new diamaris for the same money.I've held out for a few weeks incase costco had the deal of 20% off 4 michelins but looks like I will need to bite the bullet!
Thanks for keeping me right, I wonder whether the wheels in question could be off a x6. Cheers Kenny

put up the ebay link and we'll try to tell you.
X6 rims in 20" sizes are usually 10" front and 11" rear with the same tyre sizes as the E70 mentioned earlier. Note X6 uses mixed hub sizes front same as E70, rear same as E53 (and most other 5 stud BMWs)
