Right gents I need some help here. That photo is where the ignition wiring plugs into the switch. The one on the left is from my X5 the other is a new one with the correct number from the parts catalogue and every one that is advertised has the same plug pattern as the new one. You can see mine is different but why, what might it be off what advice can anyone offer.

Got a part number? Are there any other numbers on both the original and new?
From what you have in the images they look like Revision A2 and B1, but not what that might entail. The pin numbering matches but both the moulding.
Year and month of your car build might help too. Can’t remember the engine either (senior moment!).
Context in terms of exactly where the part fits to the car would help too. Have you got an image of what the part attaches too?

I wonder if you’ve got same number apart from the last digit being a ‘1’? Just checking the database. The version ending with a 1 is the 3.0i/3.0D. Also used for the E46.
It looks like this:
Looks very similar to your right hand image.
The image for the part number enging with a ‘2’ looks like this (and definitely matches yours). Yours looks like there’s a bit missing at the top? The bit you’ve circled top of the right image, should be in both. Everything else matches looking at the one below.
If that’s right, you’ve been sent the wrong one.

Your spot on that last image is exactly like mine down to the clear plastic cover. I’ll get in touch with them and point out the error of their ways.

The spyglass revealed my unit had a BMW logo and p/n 6901962. The other one 690196 no number 2. I’ll take a picture of the plug tomorrow just so it’s on record for the future. Many thanks for the help X5Sport

The replacement ignition switch arrived yesterday and has now been fitted. All steering wheel controls now work and airbag light is out. Interestingly the replacement clock spring hasn’t arrived yet so I suspect there was nothing wrong with the brake light switch either. So diagnostics says steering wheel and brake switch, no mention of the real culprit (ign switch) . Don’t you just love all these integrated wiring systems.

Fortunately t hasn’t been expensive the three parts came out at around £70. The brake light switch and the clock spring I will keep as spares, interestingly the ignition switch could have been repaired once the cover is popped off. It is just 6 contact points which needed a rub with emery or a file to restore good contact. Still one lives and learns.

Glad it was a fairly simple fix once you received the correct variant. Repairing the original one would probably have required ‘BMW Approved emery coated with tritanium oxide - only available on the other side of the galaxy’.
